About 110 tons of banned Briefer G-5 (Carbofuran) has been recovered from Syedpur Bisik Industrial Area of Nilphamari. On Tuesday (June 25) afternoon, based on a secret information, upazila agriculture department, RAB-13, upazila administration and police conducted a joint operation to seize these pesticides of the banned ACI company.
According to sources, the pesticide named carbofuran is very harmful to humans and most animals. In 2016, the United Nations called on member states to ban it. Since then, 87 countries of the world have banned the pesticide. Bangladesh became the 88th country to ban it in January last year.
According to the President’s order, it was decided not to use it from last June 2023. But on July 31, the government’s National Technical Committee on Pesticides (PITAK) meeting allowed the use of carbofuran till October 30, 2023.
These banned pesticides were being sent to Jessore by truck. The law enforcement officers seized the information. Using it kills beneficial insects including maggots. These banned pesticides were being kept in warehouses in the industrial city of Syedpur and were being sent to different districts for a long time.
Syedpur Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Noor Alam Siddiqui said that the market value of these seized carbofurans is Tk 1 crore 67 lakh. Regular litigation is going on in this regard.
Syedpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shaha Alam confirmed the truth and told Jago News that the seized banned pesticides were stored in the warehouse and sealed.
