Bank officer’s nephew sentenced to 8 years imprisonment in ACC case – 2024-06-21 12:50:20

In the case of ACC, the court ordered eight years rigorous imprisonment and fine to Sheikh Masum Ul Islam, the owner of Messrs. Sourav Enterprises of Nawapara, Jessore.

On Thursday (June 20), Judge Mohammad Samchul Haque of the Special Judges Court gave this order. Convicted Masum ul Islam is absconding.

Besides, the other defendant in the case, Moniruzzaman, a former officer of United Commercial Bank (UCBL), has already been released from the case due to his death.

The sentenced Sheikh Masum ul Islam is the son of Sheikh Sirajul Islam of Mirzapur village in Khulna Sadar and a resident of Baliadanga village in Abhaynagar, Jessore.

Anti-Corruption Commission ACC lawyer Sirajul Islam confirmed the matter.

According to the source of the case, Moniruzzaman was working as a manager at Nawapara Bazar UCBL branch in Abhaynagar from May 2, 2002 to September 10, 2009. At that time M/s Sourav Enterprise owner Sheikh Masum ul Islam opened an account in this bank. Later, the manager Moniruzzaman violated the rules and gave an additional loan of Tk 1 crore 38 thousand 878 to Masum for his own profit. As a result of sanctioning additional loans, the bank suffered a loss of Tk 1 crore 20 lakh 82 thousand 161.

When the matter came to the attention of the bank authorities, the manager of UCBL Nawapara branch, Anwar Hossain, filed a case in May 2009 against Moniruzzaman under the Anti-Corruption Act in the District and Sessions Judge Court.

According to the investigation report of the case, Sheikh Masum ul Islam, the son of the cousin of branch manager Sheikh Moniruzzaman, is the owner of Sourav Enterprise. They misused their power to gain unfair advantage and disobeyed the instructions of the bank authorities and caused financial loss to the bank by lending an additional Tk 30 lakh 38 thousand 878. After the long investigation of this case, investigating officer ACC Deputy Director Wazed Ali Gazi submitted the charge sheet to the court accusing Moniruzzaman and his nephew Masum.

On August 16, 2022, after hearing the testimony of the witnesses, the judge sentenced the accused Masum Ul Islam to five years rigorous imprisonment and another six months imprisonment without paying a fine of Tk 20,000. In addition, as the charges were proved, he ordered three years rigorous imprisonment, Tk 10,000 fine and another four months imprisonment.
