Bangladesh: Oscar Award -winning director’s ancestral home is demolished

The statement said, “Since this building is a symbol of Bengali cultural revival, it would be better to revise and consider the selection of repair and reconstruction, so that it can be used as a symbol of the museum of literature and a symbol of the common culture of India and Bangladesh.”

Satya Jait Rai was born in Kolkata in 1921 and began directing his film ‘Padre Panchali’ in 1955, which gained fame globally and became the first film of his main ‘Apo Tribilage’, giving him numerous awards, two of Ken Palm D. and awarded in 1992.

Rai’s son Sandeep Rai said that the filmmaker intended to include photos of his ancestor’s house in a documentary, but he abandoned the idea after seeing his condition.

Authorities in Dhaka defended the decision, saying the building had become a threat to children and that the new building would resume the academy activities.

MD Mehdi Zaman, a children’s affairs officer in District Memon Singh, told The Daily Star, ‘The house was released for 10 years, and the activities of the Shishu Academy are running from the rented site.’

He added that the district administration and the public work department have formally followed the procedure.
