“Azerbaijan is once again hosting a prestigious international event. On May 1, the opening ceremony of the VI World Intercultural Dialogue Forum on “Dialogue for peace and global security” was held at the Baku Congress Center. The President of the country, Ilham Aliyev, who participated in the opening ceremony of the Forum, specially noted that the participation of representatives from 110 countries in the event once again confirms that the Forum is a very important international platform.
Kamaladdin Gafarov, a member of the Milli Majlis, said these words in his statement to Publika.az.
The deputy said that the head of state emphasized the importance of the topics to be discussed at the Forum. “After the last Forum held in Baku in 2019, the world has not been safe during the past period. The number of new conflicts, new areas of instability and new threats is increasing in the world. Of course, the Baku Forum is expected to make valuable contributions to the issue of determining solutions to all these global problems.”
According to K. Gafarov, the factor of intercultural dialogue has always played an important role in solving global security issues: “As mentioned in the speech of Mr. President Ilham Aliyev, the location of Azerbaijan between the East and the West determined the formation of our country as a place where cultures meet for centuries. The multicultural and ethnically diverse Azerbaijani society has experienced the most important values such as tolerance, mutual respect, friendship and partnership. It is this positive trend that ultimately created the foundation for the successful development of Azerbaijan as an independent country. One of the main reasons for launching the Intercultural Dialogue Forum in Azerbaijan is that peace, stability and solidarity in our country and society are inextricably linked with cultural diversity and mutual respect. It is an undeniable fact that there is always a positive intercultural dialogue within Azerbaijan. As our head of state said, multiculturalism is not some abstract concept that we have to learn for the citizens of Azerbaijan. This is our daily life.”
Emphasizing the importance of the views against new colonial trends in President Ilham Aliyev’s speech, K. Gafarov then said: “As always, President Ilham Aliyev’s speech contained concrete statements reflecting a principled position on many global issues. The head of state drew attention to the fact that during his presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement, Azerbaijan always encouraged the struggle against new colonial tendencies. It was noted that most of the members of that Organization had a very heavy and dark colonial history, and fighting against it is a fight for justice and international law. Mr. President once again demonstrated his political will and determination and declared that it is unacceptable for some European countries to treat other nations as colonies in the 21st century. The head of our state clearly expressed his opposition to the forced assimilation carried out in more than ten French overseas territories and stated that it is necessary to put an end to this situation as soon as possible. Highlighting the importance of this issue for intercultural dialogue, President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that it will not be allowed to apply double standards regarding such a point.
