The Ministry of Defense of Armenia informs that since the dawn of February 13, the Azerbaijani armed forces opened fire from small arms in the direction of the Armenian positions of Inner Hand, as a result of which the Armenian side currently has two dead and wounded. It seems that Azerbaijan had already started preparing the provocation the day before.
In any case, on February 12, Azerbaijan spread information that Armenian border guard units shot and injured an Azerbaijani soldier in the direction of Kapan-Zangelan. The Armenian side reacted quickly, announcing that it would conduct an investigation and, if the Armenian servicemen fired unreasonably, they would be held accountable. However, the goal of the Azerbaijani side was clearly the information trick preceding the provocation, which is evidenced by the fact that on the same day at dawn in the same border zone, the Azerbaijanis carried out their planned provocation and killed two Armenian servicemen and wounded several others.
Yesterday, Baku also invited the EU ambassador to Azerbaijan to the Foreign Ministry and expressed displeasure with the EU observation mission in Armenia, declaring that the mission allegedly violates the agreements and is “anti-Azerbaijani”. In practice, both the information about the violation of the cease-fire by the Armenian side and the dissatisfaction with the EU mission were for Azerbaijan a manifestation of planned military provocation, just “informational preparation” for another operation of murder and blackmail.
Basically, it is possible that Azerbaijan, by resorting to such an adventure just days after the holding of the extraordinary presidential election, pursues the goal of “touching the ground”, so to speak, to check the Armenian side on the one hand, and the international actors on the other, to touch their disposition. It means that, if the international actors do not intend to turn a blind eye to the risks of Azerbaijan’s military adventurism, they should give a disproportionately harsh assessment to the provocation that took place.
