It’s official now. This Thursday, the Municipal Council approved the change of name of Avenida IV Centenario to Avenida Presidente Sebastián Piñera Echenique as a tribute to the deceased former president and resident of the commune.
According to the municipality, the deadlines and changes to the traffic signals should be announced after the next council meetings.
Councilors Julio Dittborn (UDI), Catalina San Martín (Evópoli), Luis Hadad (RN), Javiera Kretschmer (Evópoli) and Marie Claude Mayo (REP) voted in favor. While Isidora Alcalde (RD), Patricio Bopp (UDI), Catalina Ugarte (REP) and Leonardo Prat (REP) rejected the motion.
“I want to thank the neighbors who asked us for this proposal and the more than 25 thousand neighbors who participated, regardless of what their option was. It is an honor that this tribute has been approved to honor former President Sebastián Piñera for everything he did for our commune and our country,” said Mayor Daniela Peñaloza (UDI) after voting in favor and approving the measure.
“I also want to send a special greeting to the Piñera family for accepting this proposal from the first moment, because it was with them that we first talked and spoke personally,” added the community leader.
The Municipality of Las Condes highlighted the completion of a citizen survey between February 12 and 19, 2024, where it was reported that 28,888 thousand residents voted.
According to the results delivered by the municipality, 60.65% of the residents were in favor of the name change. On the other hand, IV Centenario was the most voted alternative with 65.56% compared to the options of Avenida Apoquindo (18.34%) and Avenida Las Condes (16.1%).
Subsequently, the Communal Council of Civil Society Organizations of Las Condes (COSOC) held an extraordinary session on February 26, in which its board of directors approved the modification by a majority.
“By the majority of the councilors present at the Extraordinary Session of February 26, 2024 and, in compliance with the provisions of Article 5 letter c of Law No. 18,695, Constitutional Organic Law of Municipalities and Article 27 letter e), Duc. Alc. Sect. 1st No. 3739, Regulations of the Communal Council of Las Condes, it is agreed to send a favorable report, regarding modifying the name of Avenida IV Centenario, to “Avenida Presidente Sebastián Piñera Echenique”, reported the COSOC.
