Vienna (OTS) Food in Austria is safer than ever before: This is ensured by strict controls and high standards in companies. “Austria Eats Informed” explains how these work and what measures are associated with them. Johannes Pleiner-Duxneuner, Managing Director of the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), reports on the dense control network in Austria and talks in an interview about how important it is to provide understandable information about risks and to offer actionable recommendations for action. The AGES risk barometer shows how the risk perception of the Austrian population has developed since 2017. The highest level of safety also applies when using additives: These must be harmless to health and technologically necessary. “Austria Eats Informed” reveals how food additives are used, tested and labelled in the fact check.

AGES Managing Director: High standards and continuous controls

In recent years, concerns about energy supply, nutritional quality and food safety have increased – this is shown by our risk barometer. But: Food safety in Austria is very high“, so Priv.-Doz. Dr. Johannes Pleiner-DuxneunerManaging Director of AGES. This is ensured by high standards and regular, cross-border controls. In order to make the population aware of this, AGES is constantly working on even better external communication. “The information should always be easily accessible and understandable,” explains Priv.-Doz. Dr. Johannes Pleiner-Duxneuner.

Safe enjoyment through seamless monitoring systems

From approval to labeling to inspection: In Austria, food can be enjoyed safely. This is ensured by the daily self-inspections of the food companies themselves and the official inspections of around 30,000 companies along the food chain every year. Companies are constantly developing their internal control systems for quality assurance and often also work with independent laboratories. “Through continuous research and development as well as strict monitoring, food safety remains consistently high“, emphasizes Mag. Katharina KoßdorffManaging Director of the Food Industry Association.
