Despite that the maritime profession remains “male-dominated”, female employment continues to show a strong upward trend, while the number of new seafarers is also on the rise, according to the 2nd Information Report of the Naval Defense Fund (NAT) on maritime employment presented yesterday at Posidonia 2024. In 2023 female seafarers already represented 7.1% of the total registered seafaring employment, significantly exceeding the international and European average (1.2% for 2021 and 2.4% for 2022 respectively). In particular, the total number of registered female seafarers for 2023 reached 1,838, an increase of 13.5% compared to 2022, while the number of registered female seafarers in the 8th month of 2023 reached 1,265, showing an increase of 11.6 % compared to the 8th month of 2022.
