ATTENTION: Election of mayors will have the same voting centers

The Nuevas Ideas party continues to lead, with a wide margin, the results of the final scrutiny of the legislative election, until yesterday it had obtained 34 deputies, thus ensuring, by the will of the voters, the simple majority for the 2024 legislature. 2027 will be 31.

The seats that allowed the cyan party to reach half plus one of the votes were the five in the department of Santa Ana, since it won them all, in the absence of counting the votes cast on February 4 in the departments of La Libertad and San Salvador, the ones with the greatest representation in the congress, since between them they provide 24 deputies. 37 have already been distributed.

With a simple majority assured, the cyan bench will approve, reform, repeal and authentically interpret the laws, approve the agreements on the reforms of the Constitution, elect the president and the magistrates of the Court of Accounts and the magistrates proposed by the political parties to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE).

To count vote by vote, the collegiate body enabled the facilities of the National Gymnasium, in San Salvador, on the previous Saturday; First, the boxes were opened in the departments of Cabañas, Cuscatlán and San Vicente, where Nuevas Ideas won all the deputies; that is, six out of six.

The ballots from La Unión, Morazán and Chalatenango continued, to which two deputies per constituency correspond. The cyan party won the four of La Unión and Morazán and left out the current head of the legislative fraction of the FMLN that represents Morazán, Jaime Guevara.

While in Chalatenango he obtained one seat and the other was achieved by the PCN, with Reynaldo Cardoza. In Sonsonate, La Paz and Usulután the Nuevas Ideas party won all the seats (12) and the FMLN representative and candidate for Usulután, Marleni Funes, was left out.

Silvia Ostorga, deputy head of the ARENA caucus in Congress, who in practice is the head of the legislative group, also lost the election, since Portillo Cuadra has been absent for months. On the other hand, in Ahuachapán the majority party won two seats and the PCN obtained its second deputy, with Serafín Orantes.

During yesterday afternoon the San Miguel boxes were scrutinized, with the result of four deputies for Nuevas Ideas and one for the PDC, with Reinaldo Carballo.

“Tonight we begin with the 1,023 electoral packages corresponding to La Libertad,” reported Guillermo Wellman, TSE magistrate, yesterday afternoon when visiting the National Gymnasium.

According to the electoral magistrate, the collegiate body hopes that the final scrutiny of the legislative election will conclude on Sunday, and thus know how the Legislative Assembly will be made up with its 60 deputies, who will take office on May 1 to begin the period of three years.

For Juan Gilberto Contreras, a consultant on electoral issues, the results of the vote-by-vote count are a reflection of what was shown by national and international surveys prior to the legislative elections. He pointed out that the citizens have given two legislators to the PCN, with Reynaldo Cardoza, for Chalatenango; and Serafín Orantes, for Ahuachapán, as a result of his “performance” in the last three years of legislation.

During that time, “they maintained a political strategy of supporting the policies of the emergency regime, the Voting Abroad Law, among other important laws and initiatives,” Contreras considered in the interview Las Cosas como Son.

In his opinion, the results are also related to the elimination of the residual vote counting system, which proportionally promoted seats for the parties that came in third place. In fact, the three deputies that the FMLN won by remainder in 2021 have already lost re-election.
