Yemen’s Houthis said Monday they attacked a U.S. ship in the Gulf of Aden with several missiles. The attack was “precise and direct,” Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said, quoted in a statement broadcast by the Houthi-run Al-Masirah television channel. Last Monday, US Central Command announced that the container ship Gibraltar Eagle, flagged of the Marshall Islands but owned and operated by a US shipping company, was hit by a Houthi missile at 4pm local time.
The attack on the Gibraltar Eagle, later claimed by the Houthis, further exacerbates tensions in the Red Sea following US-led attacks against the rebels.
The Houthi attacks have disrupted global shipping amid the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, targeting a crucial corridor connecting energy and goods shipments from Asia and the Middle East through the Suez Canal to the Europe.
Violent explosions were heard across the Yemeni port city of Hodeida on Monday evening, local residents said. One of the explosions was heard in the direction of the airport, which is located south of the city, while another was heard from Jad’a Hill, in the Alluheyah neighborhood, north of the city, according to local residents.
It is not yet clear whether these explosions were due to an American-British attack on Houthi sites or a missile attack launched by the Houthis. No immediate comment was available from either side of the incident.
