The Czech parahockey team, of which the young hockey player was a member, drew attention to his departure. Even Jaromír Jágr admired his bravery. “Every match ends once. But some end painfully early. Ondra fought with incredible strength and courage. On the ice and in life. You will be a part of our parahockey family, Ondro, forever.” the boy and his family received a beautiful confession.
Ondra fell ill in 2020. He used to have pain in his leg, often after exercise, because he used to be an active athlete. After all, he not only played hockey, but also played handball, loved archery and roller skating. When he fell off his scooter at the end of March of that year and was examined in the emergency room, it turned out to be a fracture. But another finding was much more serious. Doctors discovered osteosarcoma. It is a malignant tumor that destroys the bone and grows into the soft tissues around the bone, and can also metastasize to the lungs, other bones or the brain.
He lost his leg, but he didn’t give up
In 2021, Ondra had to have his right leg amputated due to a tumor, even after that he played para-hockey and was part of the junior national team. Until his last moments, thanks to quality palliative care, he lived at home with his mother and older sister. The father left the family during the boy’s illness.
At the beginning of the summer, a collection was also held for Ondra’s family on the charity platform Donio, which was founded by the Naše dítě Foundation. “Ondra’s mother is paying off the mortgage on the house, which was basically uninhabitable at the time of the move, and now she has to pay for everything from one salary and take care of her dear sick son. Of course, this is difficult even with the help of those closest to you,” described Zuzana Šafářová from the Naše dítě Foundation at the time. People sent 363 thousand crowns to a family in a cruel life situation. Even this great human help and heartfelt messages that people left for Ondra’s mother certainly helped in the most difficult moments.
