SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- At least 40 people died and more than 100 were injured, according to unofficial reports, in the worst terrorist attack perpetrated in Russia in recent years.
Several armed men, dressed in combat uniforms, opened fire and detonated explosives in a major concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow, according to The Associated Press (AP).
Images showed Crocus City Hall engulfed in flames, while videos emerged of at least four gunmen opening fire with automatic weapons and panicked Russians fleeing for their lives.
In one of the videos, three men dressed in civilian clothes and armed with rifles shoot at point-blank range at corpses scattered in the lobby of the concert hall.
Apparently, there were children among the victims of the attack. According to AP, at least two explosions occurred at Crocus City Hall this Friday night.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the attack as a “huge tragedy” that authorities are investigating as terrorism. The incident left the concert hall in flames and with the roof collapsed, was the deadliest in Russia in years and occurred as the country’s war in Ukraine dragged on for a third year.
The assailants threw explosives, triggering the huge fire in the hall, with capacity for 6,000 people, according to Russian media.
Video from outside showed the building in flames, with a huge cloud of smoke billowing into the night sky. Dozens of fire trucks, ambulances and other emergency vehicles responded, while several fire helicopters flew overhead to drop water on the flames.
The attack occurred while the crowd was gathering to attend a performance by the famous Russian rock group Picnic. Russian press reported that concertgoers were being evacuated, but that an unknown number may have been trapped by the flames.
The Kremlin did not immediately blame anyone for the attack, but some Russian lawmakers were quick to blame Ukraine. something that Mykhailo Podolyak, advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, denied.
The attack comes just days after Russian ruler Vladimir Putin declared his electoral victory after winning with a record number of votes, underscoring the Russian leader’s complete control over the country’s political system.
