At least 27 people were injured by a great explosion in a gas station in Rome: two are serious

At least 27 people – among them 11 members of the police, the police and firefighters – were injured by a strong explosion recorded this Friday in a gas station in southeast of Rome, which has also caused several fires and a large column of visible smoke from different points of the city, in addition to damages in nearby buildings. Of the injured people, two are serious.

The agents suffered wounds of different consideration, according to sources from the Police Headquarters, as well as emergency personnel, without ruling out more affected among the pedestrians and residents in nearby buildings.

The powerful deflagration, which was heard throughout the city, occurred at around 8:00 local time (6:00 GMT) in the Prenestino neighborhood, in the southeast of the capital, and the first hypotheses point out that firefighters had been alerted by a truck that had hit a pipe, according to local media.

When they arrived, the great explosion occurred, which preceded others less powerful and caused a dense column of black smoke and a great fire. The flames are already controlled.

The RAI previously reported that the Emergency Department of the Sant’Eugenio hospital received three injured, all with fractures that required the activation of orange and red emergency codes. Simultaneously, in the Complex Operations Unit of Burns of the same center, two patients transferred from other hospitals were arriving.

Disclosures have been found dispersed up to 300 meters from the explosion place.

The authorities closed a nearby subway station and cordoned off the area to avoid access to passersby, while damage is evaluated and safety in the area is guaranteed.

Up to the place, 10 firefighters have moved. In addition, local media indicated that a nearby sports center and two residential buildings have also been evacuated.

The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, is in contact with the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, to closely follow the consequences of the incident, as confirmed to the Efe news agency sources from the presidency of the Italian government.

“I express my closeness to all injured, including order agents, firefighters and health personnel, and I get my most sincere thanks to those who participated in rescue and security operations,” Meloni wrote in X.

While the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said that he continues “with special attention the state of the injured, especially that of police officers and firefighters who quickly intervened to provide first aid.”

Who also expressed himself on social networks was Pope Leo XIV: “I pray for the people involved in the explosion of a gas station, which occurred this morning in the pre -staining neighborhood, in the heart of my diocese. I continue with concern the development of this tragic accident,” he wrote in X.

The authorities indicated that the rescue operations were difficult because next to the distributor there was an ambulance station with oxygen pumps inside, a circumstance that could have caused the explosions.
