Pharaonic astronomical observatory discovered. PHOTO/ The New York Post
Archaeologist Dr. Hossam Ghanim claims to have found a sundial and other objects found inside a building designed with a tilted architecture to measure shadows and the movement of the sun, according to Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
Carvings depicting the sunrise and sunset during the three seasons of the year and treasures from that period and previous dynasties were also discovered.
As reported by Ancient-origins, this finding is called a significant discovery.
The astronomical tower, made “of five tiered limestone blocks,” is part of the Buto Temple, a larger complex found in Kafr Sheikh, an area about 2½ hours north of the Great Pyramids of Giza.
According to Egyptian archaeology official Dr. Ayman Ashmawi, there are special side entrances on its east and west sides to better track the sun’s daily path, along with a central columned hall that opens in the shape of a letter,
Another circular hall has a stone block on the floor along with two other blocks for measuring the sun’s angle and five satellite rooms made of “milk bricks” that were likely used for equipment storage.
There are four additional rooms made of this material plus one small room made of stone, the last of which is probably the observatory itself.
The front of the site features a large, tall milk brick wall that slopes inward, evoking a similar style of calligraphy seen in other ancient temples in the kingdom.
Also excavated was “a relatively large hall with three walls covered with yellow slate”.
The object contained the remains of a blue painting along with images of the pharaoh’s falcon god Horus, Osiris the god of the dead, terracotta snakes, and more related artwork and jewelry, including a necklace.
A grey granite statue dating from the Saite dynasty, which ruled from 664 to 332 BC, was also found at the observatory.
