MIAMI, United States. – Cuban musician Arturo Sandoval will be one of the honorees at the 47th edition of the Kennedy Center Honors, the institution that celebrates lifetime artistic achievements announced Thursday. Sandoval joins an illustrious list of this year’s honorees, which includes film director Francis Ford Coppola, the rock band Grateful Dead, singer Bonnie Raitt and the cultural institution The Apollo.
“I am deeply honored and humbled to receive this prestigious recognition from the Kennedy Center Honors,” said Sandoval. “This recognition is an extraordinary milestone in my career and a testament to the support and encouragement I have received from my family, friends, colleagues and fans. Throughout my career, I have sought to create, perform and inspire with passion and integrity. Being recognized by such an esteemed institution validates my efforts and motivates me to continue pushing the boundaries of my art.”
The tribute ceremony will take place on December 8, 2024, at the Kennedy Center Opera House, in a celebration that will include performances and tributes by leading artists from New York, Hollywood and other art capitals.
David M. Rubenstein, president of the Kennedy Center, highlighted Sandoval’s influence on American culture: “Arturo Sandoval transcended literal borders coming from Cuba more than 30 years ago and today continues to unite cultures with his intoxicating mix of Afro-Cuban rhythms and modern jazz.”
Sandoval, renowned for his exceptional ability on the trumpet and flugelhorn, is also a dynamic pianist, percussionist and vocalist. His versatility and ability to blend diverse musical styles, including jazz, classical and Latin, have cemented his position as one of the most respected and admired musicians in his field.
The Cuban artist has been awarded 10 Grammy Awards, six Billboard Awards, an Emmy and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, awarded by former President Barack Obama. He was also recently honored with a Grammy Award for his lifetime achievement.
In its announcement, the Kennedy Center also recalled Sandoval’s “remarkable life story,” who “overcame political oppression in Cuba and found success on the international stage.”
“While opinions on who is the ‘best’ trumpet player in the world may vary depending on personal preferences and criteria, Arturo Sandoval is undoubtedly among the most respected and admired musicians in his field,” the institution said.
“He is, without a doubt, one of the world’s greatest entertainers, having been seen by millions performing live at the Oscars, the Grammys, the White House and at the industry’s most prestigious performing arts venues and festivals around the world,” The Kennedy Center concluded.
