An alleged trafficker and labor exploiter of Cubans was recently apprehended in Irving, United States. The arrest was the outcome of a collaborative operation between Agents of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) and the Dallas Police Department.
Officers from the US Department of Homeland Security’s Violent Crime and Gang Task Force were also involved in the arrest.
According to a TABC report, Luis Diaz Sala, a citizen, was accused of trafficking Cubans in February 2022.
The objective was to smuggle individuals from Cuba into the United States and coerce them into working in a TABC-licensed establishment, all to repay the smuggling debt, as reported by the WFAA channel.
During the investigation, Diaz Sala’s potential connections to the business were confirmed. TABC agents obtained an arrest warrant for him in May 2023 and apprehended him shortly after.
In this case, he has been charged with violating Texas labor trafficking laws. Diaz Sala is currently in custody at the Dallas County Jail, and the name of the involved business will be disclosed upon completion of the investigation.
As a result, Thomas Graham, the executive director of TABC, emphasized that combating labor trafficking and human trafficking is a top priority.
