Army declared Codazzi free of antipersonnel mines

Through non-technical studies, soldiers from the Humanitarian Demining Engineer Battalion No. 3 investigated 49 accidents and incidents, clearing an area of more than 7,000 m², in zone I of Agustín Codazzi.

“This is the result of the work between the deminers of the National Army, the local authorities and the community, allowing us to rule out the presence of explosive devices and deliver that part of the municipality, contributing significantly to the safety of the inhabitants,” reported Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Cedeño Borrero, operations officer of the Humanitarian Demining Engineer Brigade No. 3.

In mine risk education, facilitators developed more than 700 training sessions, benefiting more than 20,000 inhabitants.

“By receiving the declaration of an area, it is a very significant advance, where our farmers and visitors can feel calmer. Now they can continue cultivating the land with hope, continue with their processes of coffee, cocoa, fruit trees and the traditional crops that represent the essence of our region,” highlighted Víctor Manuel Espinosa, government secretary.

In addition, it is hoped to promote tourism so that visitors can travel and enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the Serranía del Perijá with confidence.

The humanitarian demining work had the support of the soldiers of the Tenth Brigade, attached to the First Division of the National Army, who provided support to guarantee the integrity and life of the deminers and the community during the development of the operations.
