Arms trafficking network that operated from prison falls: gendarmes among those arrested

In a simultaneous operation carried out early this Friday in two regions, security forces managed to dismantle a network of internment and sale of weapons that operated from inside the prisons. The raid, carried out in Santiago and the Coquimbo Region, included the intervention of multiple private homes and the inspection of five penal units.

The operation was led by the Western Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office and had the collaboration of the Criminal Investigation Department (Dicrim) of the Gendarmerie, in addition to the OS9 and the GOPE of the Carabineros. Under the direction of regional prosecutor Marcos Pastén, the authorities managed to arrest a group of individuals dedicated to arms trafficking, who coordinated their activities from prison.

As stated BiobioAmong those detained are at least 11 people, including several gendarmes who, according to internal complaints from the Gendarmerie, would be involved in acts of corruption linked to this criminal network.

The operation is still underway, and it is expected that in the coming hours more details about its execution will be provided and additional information about the upcoming formalizations will be presented.
