Armenia is ready for even closer rapprochement with the European Union, the Armenian news agency ARMENPRESS reported, referring to a statement by the speaker of the country’s parliament (National Assembly) Alen Simonyan.
In front of the media, he expressed his dissatisfaction with Armenia’s allies, spoke about the freezing of the country’s relations with the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the non-working security system, ARMENPRESS explained.
On the question of whether Armenia is ready to strengthen its relations with the EU in order to receive the status of a candidate member of the bloc, Simonyan said: “We are ready. And we will move in the direction that guarantees us the greatest safety. Let’s be a democratic state now – this is our most reliable security system”.
When asked if this means that Armenia is changing the direction of its foreign policy, the Speaker of the Parliament answered that in such cases one should not rush.
“Our actions show that in our country democracy has much higher values than in most countries that are our partners and are already members of the EU. This is not what we are saying, this is what our partners from the EU are saying. I think that we should think in this direction. But I don’t want to rush. As for the state, it is not good to make sudden moves,” said Simonyan.
In front of representatives of the media, he pointed out that with his election in 2021, the Armenian people have failed a large-scale geopolitical plan to include Armenia in a state union with Russia and Belarus. At the same time, he did not rule out a Russian-Turkish or Russian-Azerbaijani agreement.
“No one should be surprised that Armenia is trying to preserve its independence. The Armenian people interfered in those plans, in 2021 they elected this government, which (according to the plan) had to go, for a new government to come in union state. That was the plan,” the speaker of the National Assembly said, quoted by the Armenian News Agency.
“In 2021, the Armenian people decided with their election a geopolitical issue and probably without realizing it, and probably with some awareness of it, failed a big geopolitical plan. To include Armenia in a state union of Russia and Belarus – that was the plan,” he said Simonyan.
