Argentina: they call a general strike against the Milei decree

The appeal is due next January 24, starting from 12:00 (local time), and will include a mobilization in Parliament.

Argentina’s General Confederation of Labor (CGT), which brings together the country’s largest unions, called for a general strike on Thursday against the decree and the “omnibus law” that Javier Milei’s government sent to Congress, the State Télam agency.

The measure of force will take place starting from 12:00 (local time) on January 24 and will include a mobilization in front of Parliament.

The decision was confirmed by the union leaders after attending a meeting of the Confederal Central Committee (the highest deliberative and executive body).

Furthermore, the strike call comes in the aftermath of the massive protest by trade unions and social organizations in front of the Buenos Aires courts, to demand the annulment of the Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU) signed by the president last week.

The first blow against Milei

This is the first general strike against the administration of the leader of La Libertad Avanza (LLA), who has been in power for 18 days.

The last such measure was taken by the CGT in May 2019, and was the fifth against the direction of former president Mauricio Macri. During the four years of Alberto Fernández’s government, the union, historically aligned with Peronism, did not call any strikes.

The strike was also a reaction urged by other trade union leaders, such as the Central Argentine Workers (CTA) and the Association of State Workers (ATE), who denounced the dismissal by decree of 7,000 public employees, and other trade union groups and combative policies. .

Finally, according to Noticias Argentinas, the Confederal Central Committee of the CGT approved the following fight plan:

  • Judicial presentation against the DNU.
  • Request to meet with all blocs of deputies and senators to discuss their support for the CGT position against the DNU and the “Omnibus law”.
  • Meeting with other job centers to articulate joint measures.
  • Convocation of the CGT Regional Delegations to the Plenary on 10 January at 11:00.
  • National strike starting from 12:00 on January 24th and mobilization at the National Congress.
  • Give the National Administrative Council the power to dictate the measures it deems appropriate whenever the current situation so requires.

Against “labor reform”

On Wednesday, as part of the march towards the Palazzo dei Tribunali, where the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (Csjn) is based, the leaders of the CGT held a short event in which they read a document addressed to President Milei, entitled ‘ We are the workers, we are not ‘the caste’”, as the ‘libertarian’ leader calls traditional political leaders.

The union states in the text that the president “promised to make an adjustment that would be paid for by what he calls the ‘political caste'” and that workers would receive “the benefits of that cut.”

However, they warn that “their first act of government” is a decree of necessity and urgency that contains “many measures that are arbitrary, unconstitutional and detrimental to a vast number of civil, commercial and social rights”, as well as introducing “a ferocious reform” regressive labor legislation whose sole objective is to discipline workers, limit trade union activity and favor only commercial interests”.

The president’s DNU repeals more than 300 laws to deregulate the economy and moves against workers’ rights. For example, it extends the probationary period for employees from three to eight months, allowing dismissal without compensation. Likewise, the decree has been considered “unconstitutional” by human rights organizations, as it aims to make legislative changes without going through Congress.

This “megadecree” will come into force this Friday, without Justice having so far accepted any of the protections presented to suspend it, one of these, prepared by the CGT.
