Are UNP trucks transporting FARC dissidents?

The Army on Tuesday stopped a caravan in the department of Antioquia in which leaders of a block of the Central General Staff (EMC), the main dissident group of the FARC, which is negotiating peace with the government, were allegedly traveling.

The governor of Antioquia, Andres Julian Rendonsaid that these people were traveling in “three high-end vehicles” near the town of Porcesito, on the highway that connects Medellín with the town of Amalfi.

“They are allegedly members of the Magdalena Medio Bloc of the FARC dissidents,” Rendón said.

According to local media, these people were travelling in vans belonging to the National Protection Unit (UNP), which is part of the Ministry of the Interior, and among them is Alexander Díaz Mendoza, alias ‘Calarcá’, who is the commander of the Magdalena Medio Block and one of the EMC negotiators with the Government.

Last February, the Attorney General’s Office lifted the arrest warrant that was in force against ‘Calarcá’ so that he could take part in the peace process with the Government.

However, the other two alleged dissident leaders who are in the caravan, apparently, are not part of the negotiating table, which is why the governor of Antioquia said: “It is believed that some of them have outstanding arrest warrants, it is believed that some of them are participating in the negotiating table.”
