“Expired food products are returned to the counters after being relabeled.”
Publika.az reports that Eyyub Huseynov, the head of the Free Consumers Union (ABU), informed about this.
According to him, an amazing situation has arisen in Azerbaijan:
“Expired goods are withdrawn from sale and given to the distributor, who returns the goods to the manufacturer. After that, the product is put in new packaging and returned to the shelf,” the expert assured.
He said that state institutions have discovered similar cases several times.
“Tens of tons of food expire every day. So why aren’t they openly disposed of in landfills? “Last year, ADB participated in the procedure of decontamination of about 100 tons of expired products with the participation of representatives of the Food Safety Agency (FAS) at the initiative of Azersun Holding,” said Huseynov.
He noted that other companies should follow this example, but unfortunately, this is not happening.
According to the head of ADB, spoiled goods should be destroyed in public places, or a special program should be implemented in Azerbaijan for the tracking and control of food products, which is successfully used in many countries. The program allows you to track the expiration date of certain products in which stores. Moreover, this program should be integrated into the system of the Food Safety Agency of Azerbaijan.
It should be noted that there are still cases of poisoning from low-quality products in Azerbaijan. According to AQTA, in 2023, 763 complaints about food poisoning were received and 143 facts were confirmed. In total, 1128 people were examined, of which 285 people were diagnosed with food poisoning. Two people died.
