Archaeologists Find Skeleton Surrounded by Gold at Historic Pompeii Site

ROMA – A group of archaeologists at a historical site Pompeii found a pair of nearly complete male and female skeletons, lying down holding valuables believed to have belonged to them.

The woman’s skeleton was found on a bed surrounded by gold, silver and bronze coins, as well as some jewellery including pearls and gold earrings.

Meanwhile, a man’s skeleton was found not far from him.

Archaeological Park Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel described the discovery as “priceless” as it was made in an ancient city destroyed by a volcanic eruption in Region IX of Mount Vesuvius.

“This discovery allows us to obtain a lot of information about the daily life and microhistory of ancient Pompeii,”

“With accurate documentation we can confirm the uniqueness of the Vesuvian area,” Zuchtriegel said as reported by The New York Times.

According to scientists, the couple are believed to have died in horrific circumstances as a result of a ‘pyroclastic flow’ of volcanic rock that hit the town.
