MADRID, (Portaltic/EP). – Apple and Google have expanded their direct data and file transfer offerings to allow Google Photos users to send images and videos directly to iCloud Photos, without having to download them, something that will be possible thanks to a tool that will be implemented during the next week.
This collaboration is part of the Data Transfer Initiative (DTI), creator of the open source data transfer tool Data Transfer Project (DTP), which is open source and freely available to developers.
DTP envisages the development of a common framework for the transfer of data between services and applications, avoiding the user having to download it directly and thus promoting the portability of this information.
The initiative’s leaders acknowledged in a recent statement that “for many years, data migration has helped people download data from one online service and upload it to another,” which is why portability is now “something people expect from the apps and services they use every day.”
This was stated in their blog, where they have pointed out that the DTP “is the core of the DTI”, a tool that gives people “an easy way to directly transfer their personal data from the Internet.”
To that end, Apple and Google have announced that they will automate the process of transferring Google Photos to iCloud Photos, so it will not be necessary to download content to move it from the native iOS platform to the Android one starting next week.
Apple has reminded that when photos and videos are transferred from Google’s service to its own, they are not deleted from their original source. They have also indicated that this process can take between several hours and a few days, “depending on the size of the photos and videos being transferred.”
The service will be available to Apple account holders in more than 240 countries and regions around the world. If the service is enabled on an Apple account, it will also be included as an option within Google Takeout.
This format, however, is not available for minors’ accounts or managed Apple IDs. “It is not possible to import photo and video data to iCloud while Advanced Data Protection for iCloud is enabled on the account,” he added.
Once the transfer has been completed, users will receive a confirmation email from Apple indicating that it has been completed, as explained on its support page.
