(ANTALYA)- Antalya Metropolitan Municipality is establishing a closed-circuit irrigation system that 50 farmer families can benefit from in Yukarıkaraman Neighborhood of Korkuteli district with its own personnel and equipment. The system, which will serve an area of 1,000 acres, has been completed by the Municipality teams at a rate of 75 percent.
Antalya Metropolitan Municipality continues to provide closed-circuit irrigation systems to agricultural lands to prevent water waste and increase efficiency. In this context, the Metropolitan Municipality is installing a closed-circuit irrigation system in Korkuteli Yukarıkaraman Neighborhood. The Agricultural Services Department has identified two sources in the neighborhood and started work. The Metropolitan Municipality has realized this project, which cost 3.5 million, with its own means at a cost of 1.5 million, and has provided a profit of 2 million TL to the Municipality budget.
Agricultural Engineer Burak Ak from the Department of Agricultural Services said that they continue to work to eliminate the agricultural irrigation problem that has been going on in the districts for years. Ak noted the following:
“As the Metropolitan Municipality Agricultural Services Department, we are constructing a Closed Circuit Irrigation System by laying approximately 3,500 meters of transmission line. We have completed approximately 75 percent of the pool base of the facility that we started a year ago. Our farmers had two spring water sources that they used until now, and they brought it to their fields from the mountains through the channels. Due to both the long distance and the high water loss in the soil, the rate of our farmers benefiting from the water was very low. Farmers using the water coming from the channels had the opportunity to irrigate every 10-15 days. Since the opportunity to irrigate the trees in the gardens was also low, the growing period was getting very long. Our farmers will now be able to access agricultural irrigation whenever they want and store the water in the Closed Circuit Irrigation System tank when it is not being used. With this project that 50 farmers will benefit from, we will have the opportunity to irrigate an area of approximately one thousand acres and bring it to agriculture. With this work, wild irrigation will be prevented.”
Fahrettin Bahşi, one of the residents of the neighborhood, expressed his satisfaction with the closed system irrigation facility and said, “Previously, we were building a sewage path to water our gardens. We were having difficulty because the water flowing from the sewage passed through another field and the flow was low. We applied to the Metropolitan Municipality. They quickly implemented the project. Water started to come to some land. There is no longer any loss of water through evaporation and we do not waste time by building sewage. Previously, it took 10 days to water. Now, we have the opportunity to water our garden in a shorter time.”
