Heavy rain, lasting more than two hours, flooded the streets and avenues of Ipatinga in the early evening of this Wednesday (27th). The rainfall, estimated at 52 mm, as established by the report, flooded the streets and avenues of the city.

The two most critical situations were the flooded Avenida Londrina between Rua Curitiba and Rua Ilhéus, in the Veneza II district.

In Avenida Brasil, in the Iguaçu neighborhood, the water rose so much that cars floated, near the intersection with Rua Altina Gonçalves.

In Veneza II, motorists traveling along Avenida Londrina, heading towards the Caravelas neighborhood, tried to find alternative traffic on Rua Niterói, which became congested. Furthermore, at the intersection with Rua Ilhéus, Niterói was also flooded.

In less than 48 hours, Ipatinga is hit by two intense storms

According to a note released by the municipal government, despite the forecast of 30 mm of rain for this Wednesday (27), Ipatinga had to face another unprecedented storm, which caused the Ipanema river to overflow and the flooding of several streets and avenues.

“The rain gauges monitored by the municipality’s Civil Protection recorded a record rainfall of 52 mm in just one hour, an unprecedented volume in the history of the city,” underlines the note.

Remnants of Tuesday’s storm also contributed to making the situation worse, as more than 100 trees fell or were uprooted by the force of the winds, without having time to remove all the materials.

Among other regions, traffic was chaotic especially near the Vila Ipanema viaduct, due to the large flow of vehicles along the BR-458.

“Fortunately so far there has been no news of victims, but only of material damage. The structures of the 7 de Outubro sports and cultural center were also flooded”, adds the note sent by the government.

The municipal administration estimates that it will take at least ten days to bring the city back to normal urban traffic, as there is still a lot of work to be done also due to the strong storm that hit in the early hours of Tuesday (26th).

Mayor Gustavo Nunes has made maximum efforts to alleviate the inconveniences and has invited various groups to carry out maintenance, relief and revitalization actions in the city.

Attention: the recommendation is that, in the event of any emergency situation, call the Civil Protection via 199 or the Fire Brigade via 193.
