Animix 2024: Noa Scarlet and heroic stories from October 7

The international festival ‘Animix Tel Aviv’ for animation, comics and cartoons will be held this year for the 24th time at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque. This time the festival will focus on works that deal with the events of October 7 and the ongoing war in Gaza. The difficult reports, testimonies and stories of heroism are expressed in the artistic language of animators, comic artists and illustrators who will participate in the festival.

The comic book will be launched at the festivalIn the heart of October 7 – An anthology book that includes illustrations by 12 comic artists for 12 stories of heroism from today’s events. Manga artist (Japanese comics) Makoto Tanaka, who created the manga book Abduction of Noa Argamani, will come from Tokyo and be hosted at the festival, in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan. Tanaka will talk about the work and present a selection of her works, some of which incorporate the Hebrew language.

Works created during the war in Gaza, and intended to commemorate the stories of the war, will be presented at an event calledIron pencils’. The event will be hosted by Kibbutz Bari Chaim Yelin, who previously served as MK and chaired the Eshkol Regional Council. At another event, Yelin, who grew up in Argentina, He will talk with the cartoonist Michel Kishka about the comic book series ‘Mafalda’ by the Argentinian illustrator Kino, and about the connection between the Argentinian comic heroine and the events in Israel.

The comic artist, cartoonist and illustrator Ilana Zafaran This year she was awarded the title “darling of the festival”. Her works will be presented in a special exhibition, and she will guide workshops for children as well as hold a meeting with the audience led by the broadcaster Mickey Chaimovich.

The traditional Israeli competitionharvest’under the artistic direction of Tom Meder, has been expanded and will present international works in all categories, including feature films, short films, and docu-films. The competition will include more than 300 films, from 20 different countries. At the festival they said that “despite the fear of non-cooperation due to the war, artists from all over the world voted with their feet.”

The festival will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the children’s character SpongeBob, in collaboration with the Nickelodeon channel and with the participation of Ido Mosari who voices the character. At the festival there will also be a tribute to the work of the illustrator, designer and animator Yitzhak Yoresh, who passed away this year at the age of 86. Yoresh founded the animation unit at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in the 1970s, and laid the foundations for the animation department of today.
