Andrea Mainardi’s illness suddenly discovered took everyone by surprise. The chef tells what happened to him.
We are used to seeing Andrea Mainardi always full of energy in his TV appearances and in the presentations of his recipes.
It is no coincidence that he is called “the blond atomic chef”, for obvious reasons. Alongside Antonella Clerici which has consecrated him to success since 2012 by often hosting him at The cook’s testtoday it still peeps out Is always noon, and not only.
Widely followed on social media where he offers his best dishes, the chef has however lost the smile that distinguishes him due to a sudden illness.
He himself talks about it, and leaves us speechless with the story of his suffering, the unexpected discovery and the outcome.
Andrea Mainardi: the discovery of the disease
Andrea Mainardi owes everything to Antonella Clerici; in fact, it was she who gave him the popularity he enjoys today, and the chef admitted this during an interview on SanDaniele Magazine some time ago: “The debt – human and professional – that I have towards Antonella Clerici is immense, as well as towards Anna Moroni. I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t started La Prova del Cuoco […] You never forget your first love.” The friendship that binds him to the presenter meant that she was his witness at the wedding, which took place in 2019 with Anna Tripoli.
On the same occasion, the chef talks about the birth of his passion for cooking, which dates back to childhood. At just 8 years old Andrew leafing through one of his mother’s cookbooks he is struck by the image of a cook in a chef’s uniform and decides that when he grows up he will look just like him. Without knowing what she sees is Gualtiero Marchesi, and who will truly be its student. He says of the experience with the great Master: “I remember the precision and obsessive rigor, you couldn’t enter the kitchen unless you had a beard and an ironed shirt. If Italian cuisine is what it is we owe it entirely to him: he took the dishes from our homes, made them refined and elegant”.

What happened to the chef
Andrea Mainardi he is also a television face. In addition to cooking programs, however, we have also seen it elsewhere. A few years ago he was one of the contestants of Big Brother VIPand here he recounted the terrible experience with an illness that struck him suddenly. “I was on my way home after work. I was in the car at the traffic lights, I scratched my eye and I couldn’t see. The disease was in both eyes, but it started first in one. I scratched my good eye and everything was blurry.” tells. But if at first he blames tiredness, the next day he has to rush to the emergency room. Diagnosis: keratoconus. A degenerative disease that thins and deforms the cornea causing major vision problems.
To heal Mainardi he subjected himself to transplant of cornea, and has had no problems since. She confesses that she would have liked to thank the donor but obviously for privacy she never knew who she was.
