Cup exit and low point for Anderlecht in the derby with Union. The helpless Biancoviola had more than an hour to correct Lapoussin’s first goal with an extra man, but they also conceded 2-0. An honor saver from Dreyer came too late. Extra painful: Some away fans interrupted the party for a while by throwing beer glasses at Moris and the police.
Union-Anderlecht in brief:
- Key moment: Anderlecht started the second half with renewed courage, but just before the 30th minute they conceded. After a foul by Debast, the ball hit the spot and Rodriguez gave ten-man Union a 2-0 lead.
- Man of the Match: Noah Sadiki looked particularly interested in a good performance against his former team. The 19-year-old midfielder vaulted across the pitch with great acceleration and beautiful dribbling moves. With one of these he scored Lapoussin’s first goal.
- Remarkable: Today the trauma of the Union has become even greater for Anderlecht. After seven consecutive defeats in the league, the Biancoviola bite the dust for the eighth time in the Brussels rivalry, now in the cup. It’s been almost three years since Anderlecht managed to beat Union again.
Lapoussin scores, Mac Allister gets the red
Amoura, Puertas, Machida and Lazare. The list of absentees at Union for the Brussels derby against Anderlecht is not bad. The Biancoviola had to make some adjustments in defense due to the injuries of Patris and Sardella, so Bouchouari was granted his debut.
After seven consecutive defeats in the close battle, Anderlecht knew they had to be on their guard. Schmeichel had missed that briefing. The match hadn’t even started ten minutes when the goalkeeper nonchalantly passed the ball to Sadiki. The former Anderlecht player put Rodriguez through an empty net, but Rits narrowly managed to prevent the 1-0.
It arrived 25 minutes later, again with Sadiki in the lead role. He easily put Bouchouari in the wind and took the ball from the baseline to Lapoussin. With a one-shot cross, he deservedly gave Union the lead.
Just five minutes later silence fell in the Dudenpark when Mac Allister pulled the emergency brake on the Dolberg breakthrough. Referee D’Hondt didn’t hesitate for a moment and sent the Argentine off the pitch. The Biancoviola took the lead, but it was not possible to exploit the numerical majority.
Not even Anderlecht can beat Union with ten men
A stormy first quarter in the second half? No, Anderlecht couldn’t achieve this either. Moris only had to stand out once when Dreyer almost equalized with a beautiful shot.
The ten-man Union held on easily and just before the hour Debast made things even worse for Anderlecht. The defender touches Rodriguez in the area and after VAR intervention the ball hits the spot. Rodriguez himself got behind the ball and calmly made it 2-0.
Riemer threw Vazquez into the fray who wasted a great opportunity to score the equalizer. At the other end Leysen almost made it 3-0. Unfortunately, with fifteen minutes remaining, some frustrated Anderlecht fans demanded their attention. Moris was hit with beer glasses and referee D’Hondt sent everyone inside.
After a stoppage of more than a quarter of an hour and frantic attempts by Vertonghen and Fredberg to calm the Anderlecht fans, the match could still resume. The break didn’t bring any changes for the red and whites, but Dreyer’s equalizer in extra time still created tension.
Union had difficulties, but resisted and deservedly reached the semi-finals. A double comparison with Club Brugge awaits us. For Anderlecht only the competition remains and a new crucial match against neighbors Sint-Gillis awaits on Sunday.

END
Anderlecht lost for the eighth time in a row in the nearby clash with Union and is therefore out of the cup. Union can prepare for a double clash with Club Brugge in the semi-finals. Lapoussin opened the scoring in the first half and despite the exclusion of Mac Allister, Union continued to lead after the break with a penalty from Rodriguez. After a stoppage of play due to the misconduct of some Anderlecht fans, Dreyer managed to score the equalizer in extra time, but Anderlecht went no further.
Yellow for Moris
Moris tries to steal a few more seconds. Referee D’Hondt intervenes decisively and warns the goalkeeper.
Anderlecht are still giving everything. It’s still a pain at this final stage.
Dreyer calls for another penalty after an innocent duel in the box. Referee D’Hondt rightly did not comment and not even VAR intervened.
VAR judges the goal valid and therefore it can still be exciting at Dudenpark. Will the Union resist?
Dreyer scores!
Is it still possible for Anderlecht? After a long shot from Schmeichel, Leysen unfortunately passes the ball to Dreyer. Then he shows his excellent technique and sends the ball into the goal. But there will be a VAR check for offside.
Lapoussin scores a free-kick for Union and the clock is ticking mercilessly for Anderlecht. Castro-Montes takes the free kick, but heads straight for Schmeichel.
7 more minutes
We will continue to play football for a while, because there will be more than seven minutes added. Can Anderlecht still pull off a miracle?
Anderlecht press, but Union defend their penalty area very well.
Peter Vandenbempt on Radio 1
Dreyer’s firing
Dreyer seizes the opportunity again with a long shot. The Dane has a nice long shot in his legs, but it won’t work tonight. His attempt goes high.
Applause for Rodriguez
Rodriguez is tired and is taken aside to loud applause. Kabangu takes his place.
Anderlecht does not give the impression of being able to make a breakthrough yet. Things always go wrong with the last action. The eighth consecutive defeat against Union slowly seems inevitable for the Biancoviola.
The match resumed
The match resumes after a minute-long interruption. The question is: for how long? Degreef joined Augustinsson’s team at Anderlecht. There are still about fifteen minutes of regulation play left to complete.
It doesn’t immediately look like football will be played again anytime soon. Even the commissioner gets a cup on his head and the discussions are still heated. Now they are warming up with Anderlecht and are also returning to the pitch with Union.
Accompanied by the police commissioner and Fredberg, Vertonghen and Leoni take to the field again. They start talking to the purple and white hotheads again. Will this match continue or end here today?
Game interrupted
Incredible, once again a match is ruined by frustrated fans. The cups fly onto the pitch under Moris’ goal and referee D’Hondt sends the players in. Vertonghen and Fredberg talk to the Anderlecht fans and try to calm them down.
Time is running out for Anderlecht. The white and purple still have fifteen minutes to score twice and thus force extra time.
Leysen on the net!
Union even came close to making it 3-0 following a free kick from Rasmussen. Leysen heads the ball to the far post into the side netting.
The pace must increase at Anderlecht if the visitors are to avoid an eighth consecutive defeat against Union. For now the Union is not in difficulty, it seems that there are eleven on the pitch.
Cup on the pitch
Moris flinches for a moment when an evildoer throws a cup onto the field. The goalkeeper rightly makes a fuss. D’Hondt briefly calls the captains back, but does not intervene. Stroeykens has now joined the Rits squad at Anderlecht.
Free kick for Andelrecht, centrally in front of goal. Debast can try again. He takes the ball over the wall, but also aims beyond the goal.
Vazquez misses the comeback goal
Vazquez is there right away! Vertonghen beautifully inserts the substitute into the area with a splendid pass into the centre. The Argentine tries to turn, but is unable to keep the shot low. There was so much more to do with this, what an opportunity.
Riemer intervenes and throws Vazquez into the fray. Bouchouari, who had a particularly difficult time with Sadiki, is deployed after a mediocre debut.
Rodriguez makes Union fans cheer!
Rodriguez doesn’t miss the opportunity and makes it 2-0. He aims for the center, while Schmeichel chooses a corner. With one man less, the Union suddenly has a double advantage. What else can Anderlecht do?
Sorry!
The images speak for themselves. The Union receives a penalty!
D’Hondt needs to go look at the pictures. It looks like the ball will hit the spot.
Will the Union receive a penalty?
Rodriguez goes down into the area after contact with Debast and asks for a penalty. Referee D’Hondt doesn’t comment, even if there was indeed a touch from Debast. What does VAR say?
Nice move by Sadiki
Sadiki continues playing on a cloud. With a great dribble he puts Bouchouari to the wind. The cross ultimately produces nothing.
Nilsson is brought wide to the applause of the home fans. Leysen is his replacement.
Treatment for Rodriguez and so the match is suspended for a while. It is only convenient for the Union. Anderlecht’s rhythm is momentarily broken. Meanwhile, Leysen is ready to join Union.
Debast’s free-kick seems pointless, but Anderlecht can pose a threat afterwards. Dreyer’s shot is blocked, Leoni’s header then ends up in the hands of Moris.
Yellow for Burgess and Rits
The puppets start dancing for a while after a foul by Sykes on Dolberg. Referee D’Hondt resolves the issue with yellow cards for Rits and Burgess. Anderlecht are entitled to a free kick.
Moris prevents the tie!
Debasti Dreyer launches himself with a splendid long pass. He cuts inside the area and takes a shot, but Moris keeps Union up with a great save.
The pattern of the second half already seems clear. Anderlecht take the lead, while Union are relegated. Riemer is busy arguing on the sofa. Are there any changes coming?
The Union screams again with a dangerous action. Rodriguez manages to establish himself and tries from an angle. Schmeichel intervenes well.
The first shot comes, not surprisingly, from Anderlecht. Augustinsson finds Dolberg’s head, but can’t use enough strength to frame his header.
2nd half
No changes at the start of the second half. Will Union be able to maintain the lead with ten of them or will Anderlecht hit the accelerator after the break?
Rust
Union goes to half-time with a 1-0 lead, but also with one man less. Lapoussin gave the hosts the lead after 25 minutes against a small Anderlecht. Just five minutes later, Union suffered a blow when Mac Allister brought down Dolberg, who had broken through, and the home team had to continue with ten of their own. Anderlecht took the lead, but still failed to exploit the little man.
The three minutes of extra time are almost over. For the moment, Anderlecht is unable to exploit its numerical superiority. For the biancoviola it will have to happen in the second half.
A cross from Bouchouari misses everything and everyone. Eventually the ball ends up on Dolberg’s head, but he is too surprised to do anything about it.
Dreyer aims further
Augustinsson skilfully launches the ball into the box from the left wing. Dreyer goes for it in one shot, but his volley goes high.
There are five minutes left until half-time and Anderlecht are now in control. So far, not many threats have been linked to this. Furthermore, it remains important to pay attention to the home team’s counterattacks.
Augustinsson did not pass Moris
Augustinsson briefly finds space and seizes the opportunity with a long-range shot. Not a harmless ball, but Moris knows what to do with it.
Anderlecht have now taken possession of the ball. It’s about looking for an opening.
Peter Vandenbempt on Radio 1
Mac Allister watches from the players’ tunnel, bewildered. He realizes that his action could still cause harm to the Union. For the moment the home team is holding on without problems.
Dreyer takes the free kick into the half-moon, but the Dane kicks away and directs the ball against the wall. Anderlecht now has numerical superiority. Can you use that too?
Red for Mac Allister!
The Union suddenly fell to ten. After Sykes loses the ball, Leoni quickly switches. Dolberg can go towards the goal on his own following Hazard’s indication and after a clever dribbling action. Burgess tries in vain to stop the attacker and Mac Allister pulls the emergency brake just before entering the penalty area. Referee D’Hondt has no choice: this is red.
The chick is ready to score!
Sadiki highlighted his excellent start to the match with an excellent move on the left. He puts Bouchouari to the wind, cuts the baseline and plays Lapoussin well. He puts the ball into the far corner in one fell swoop. Anderlecht have to get to work.
Yellow for Leoni
Sadiki makes things quite difficult for his former team. Leoni only manages to block it badly and receives the first yellow card of the match.
Domination belongs to the hosts, even if it is not excessive. There was only one pressing phase with Schmeichel’s error. Trembling moment for Anderlecht, who however escaped without damage.
Peter Vandenbempt on Radio 1
Nilsson wins the duel against Vertonghen and cuts into the area, but the Anderlecht captain still manages to turn the low cross into a corner. There is no danger from this.
Anderlecht can try with a free kick and Sykes has to concede a corner. Verschaeren gets into a shooting position in the sixteenth minute, but shoots wide. There was more to this.
Rodriguez leaves Schmeichel unpunished!
Olalala, Schmeichel does particularly well here. The Anderlecht goalkeeper simply passes the ball to Sadiki. It passes through Rodriguez, but an excellent defensive intervention by Rits prevents Union from making it 1-0.
Anderlecht falls significantly behind and leaves the initiative to Union. For now the home team has not managed to create problems for the white and purple.
Weak shot from Dolberg
The first ball between the posts comes from Anderlecht. After a quick counterattack, Dreyer serves Dolberg, but he launches himself too hastily from the edge of the sixteen. Moris is fine.
Still a little more ball possession and above all depth to Union in this initial phase. Anderlecht must go back.
Not a good start from Dolberg. The Danish striker loses the ball twice, but there are no chances for Union. Rodriguez enters the area, but Debast defends well and steals the ball from him.
Kick off
A week later than expected, Union and Anderlecht begin the quarter-finals of the Belgian Cup. Will the home team continue their streak of consecutive victories against the Biancoviola or will the fortunes finally change for the record-breaking Belgian champion?
Dolberg has been without a goal for six games
Kasper Dolberg has already scored 10 times for Anderlecht this season and has also scored in seven consecutive matches, but in recent weeks the Dane seems to have lost his scoring instinct. Since scoring against Westerlo on 1 December, the striker has been without a goal for six games.
We didn’t play our best game against STVV, but a late winner always feels good. The absence of Puertas and Amoura is obviously a loss, we have to adapt our game a little to this situation.

Desire for a prize
Both Anderlecht and Union want a prize. Union have narrowly missed out on the title in the last two seasons and only failed in the cup last season after penalties against Antwerp, who ultimately won the final against KV Mechelen. Since the eleventh national title in 1935, Union’s trophy cabinet has not been replenished, the last cup won dates back to 1914.
Anderlecht have been waiting for a trophy since 2017, when they won their 34th and final national title under René Weiler. Two years ago, that drought was almost over. Vincent Kompany led the Biancoviola to the cup final, but KAA Gent won on penalties. Anderlecht has managed to win the cup again since 2008.
This derby means a lot to our fans and to us. Also it’s all or nothing, we want to move forward and put in a good performance. Some of the players on the pitch today didn’t experience those seven defeats against Union. So this is not in the mind.
Brian Riemer
Seven defeats in a row
Union’s return to the top level represented a little nightmare for Anderlecht. After all, in competitions they have lost at least seven times in a row to their neighbors from Brussels.
The last time the Biancoviola managed to beat Union was in the cup. Almost three years ago, he also played heavily in the round of 16 and won by forfeit against Union, then leaders in 1B.
Who will lose their undefeated status?
Anderlecht escaped their first defeat in more than three months against OH Leuven on Sunday. Since the defeat against Standard at the end of October, the white and purple have been unbeaten in more than 12 games.
The Union is doing even better. Excluding European matches, there are 17 matches in cups and competitions without defeat. Whose unbeaten streak will end tonight?
Draw for Anderlecht, victory for Union
Anderlecht did not have a good dress rehearsal ahead of the double match against Union last Sunday. When they visited OH Leuven, they had a particularly disappointing performance and only a Sunday effort from Patris could avoid a defeat.
Union also seemed to be dropping points at home to STVV, but Rodriguez still gave the Brussels club all the spoils in extra time.
Decisive week for Anderlecht
Anderlecht opens a crucial diptych against Union, a team that the white and purple have already lost seven times in a row. But tonight Anderlecht will have to deal with their Angstgegner in this postponed cup match at Dudenpark for a place in the semi-finals. A double comparison with Club Brugge awaits us.
Anderlecht and Union will face each other again on Sunday and there too the pressure will fall above all on the Belgian record champion. In their own Lotto Park, Anderlecht can reduce the gap with the leaders to five points, but Union can also lead the white and purple to more than eleven points.
Union without number of condiments
Moris returns to goal at Union, but coach Alexander Blessin has to make do with trendsetters Amoura, Puertas, Lazare and Machida. Vanhoutte and Lapoussin return to the starting lineup after being suspended last weekend. Rodriguez, winner of the match against STVV, will also kick off.
Bouchouari makes his debut
Due to the injuries of Sardella and Patris, Brian Riemer has to move his defensive pieces again at Anderlecht. The 23-year-old Mohamed Bouchouari can therefore make his debut with the Biancoviola shirt.
Furthermore, there are no surprises and we see the same names in the starting line-up from last Sunday when we visited OH Leuven. Riemer can’t count on Delaney yet.

The Anderlecht team. Maxime Dupé normally plays in the Cup, but the French goalkeeper is not included in the selection because he is about to move to Nice.

Of course it will be difficult, but we can do it. Because we have a great team. Winning the Cup is one of our goals this season.
Christian Burgess
No Amoura, no doors
In the selection released yesterday by Blessin, the names of Amoura and Puertas are not seen. The former made a surprise start in the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations with Algeria, but will not return in time. The Algerian striker is expected for the league match against Anderlecht next weekend.
Puertas, the other strongman, is also not in the selection. He sprained his ankle against STVV last week.
Semifinals on February 7
Ostend-Antwerp is already known. Tonight’s winner will go to Club Brugge, who defeated AA Gent.

It’s snowing in Duden Park, the Union base.
The Union is Anderlecht’s tormentor. The team has already won 7 times in a row against the Biancoviola.
