With more than 400 speakers from Europe, Asia, the United States and different countries in Latin America, they will be held between On August 19 and 24, the XVI Andean Conference on Latin American Literature, JALLA 2024, that seek to promote research, dialogue and reflection on Latin American literature and cultures.
“Utopias and Dystopias of the Earth. Creation, Transformation and Destruction of Territories, Landscapes, Subjects and Communities in Literature, Arts and Humanities in Latin America” is organized by the Center for the Study of Chilean Literature (CELICH).
The conference will take place at the UC Faculty of Letters, on the San Joaquín Campus, where the conference will take place. They will present around 130 panels of papers and conferences open to the publicThe inaugural lecture will be given by Chilean essayist and literary critic, professor at the University of Chile, Grínor Rojo, on August 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the University’s Aula Magna.
The director of CELICH and professor of the Faculty of Letters, Macarena Areco, pointed out that “It is an honor for us to host JALLA, a meeting that has been held for more than 30 years and is characterized by its Latin Americanist imprint, which means the exercise of a positioned reflection and nourished by our critical thinking, about the subcontinent, from its literary and cultural productions.. On this occasion, the participation of over one hundred Brazilian researchers stands out, as well as the interest in very current issues such as femicide, migration, drug trafficking, Afro-American cultures and predominantly dystopian and apocalyptic visions linked to the environment and politics.”
In this sense, the researcher explained that it is hoped that this version will allow for “a complex and multiple exchange that will facilitate the development of dialogues and discussions between different theoretical perspectives, and that will offer a broad and updated vision of the rich and varied research of the Latin American and also global academy that focuses on the art and culture of the region.”
Since its founding in 1993 in La Paz, Bolivia, JALLA has established itself as a biannual forum that facilitates interaction between academics, writers, artists and students, promoting a broad and diverse vision of literary, cultural and research activities in the region.
The event will also feature a publishing fair such as Ediciones UC, Overol, FCE, Editorial Universidad Alberto Hurtado, Editorial USACH, La Komuna, Liberalia, Hueders, La Inquieta and LOM, which will have a varied offer of publications on art and literature, essays, narrative, poetry and literary studies.
Speakers
Among the speakers, the conferences of Chilean academics and literary critics stand out, such as Grínor Rojo, Claudio Alvarado Lincopi and Patricia Espinosa. In addition, there will be a round table discussion with the writers Nona Fernandez, Alejandra Costamagna and Andrea Jeftanovic, and thematic panels on dystopia, artificial intelligence, the anthropocene, migrations, ecocriticism, gender studies, archives, indigenous literature, landscape, city and others.
There will also be tables dedicated to specific authors, such as Jose Maria Arguedas, Mariana Enriquez, Nona Fernandez or Concepcion Evaristo and others dedicated to national or regional literature, such as Argentine, Peruvian, Amazonian, Brazilian, Bolivian, Caribbean and Chilean, among others.
