‘An oligarchy’, AMLO points out to the Judiciary after Murillo Karam was placed under house arrest

The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, accused this Friday the Judiciary of being an “oligarchy” for releasing Jesús Murillo Karam, former head of the defunct Attorney General’s Office (PGR), involved in the case of the 43 missing young people of Ayotzinapa since 2014.

The president questioned in his morning conference that the First Collegiate Criminal Court of the First Circuit has granted protection to Murillo Karam to continue his process in house arrest, after being detained since August 2022, for health reasons.

“They are like employees of the oligarchy, they do not represent the people, justice is not given to the people, they are there to defend the potentates, the groups of vested interests, what happened yesterday, which left the man on house arrest, has yet to be resolved.” former attorney Murillo Karam,” he criticized.

The arrest of Murillo Karam, a senior official during the presidency of Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018), is the most high-profile in the Ayotzinapa case and occurred after the report of the Truth Commission, which concluded in 2022 that the disappearance of the 43 students was a “state crime” that involved authorities at all levels.

The former attorney is accused of being one of the fabricators of the “historical truth,” a version of the Peña Nieto government that claimed that corrupt police officers detained the students and handed them over to the Guerreros Unidos cartel, which murdered them and incinerated them in a garbage dump in the southern state of Guerrero.

López Obrador pointed out that “it does not mean that Murillo Karam does not have the right to defend himself, just that he is treated differently than the majority.”

“There it is fast, it is expeditious. But how many are there? Thousands without a sentence. Because whoever does not have to buy their innocence, has no leverage, has no influence, has no entry into the Judiciary,” he said.

The president acknowledged that the former official has health problems, remembering that he had heart surgery in November 2022, but still asked that this not prevent justice.

“They wanted to do this about Mr. Murillo Karam during Holy Week and it was postponed, and I have been following the case, not only because there is an implication in the disappearance of the young people from Ayotzinapa, but also because in fact when the man entered the prison was sick,” he commented.

The pressure for López Obrador to resolve the Ayotzinapa case, one of his main campaign promises, has grown during the campaigns leading up to the presidential elections on June 2 amid protests by current students who accuse him of protecting the Army because there are soldiers involved.
