An astronomical phenomenon not to be missed in 2024 – The scientist next door

The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute has announced major astronomical phenomena for 2024.

On June 28 you can see the Moon and Saturn come within about 1.1 degrees, and in August you can see the Perseid meteor shower when viewing conditions are good.

At 7 a.m. on January 28, Mercury and Mars can be seen moving within 0.3 degrees*. At 5 a.m. on April 11, Mars and Saturn will come within 0.4 degrees of each other. At 11pm on August 14, Mars and Jupiter will be within 0.9 degrees of each other.

※ The angle between a planet or planet and the moon refers to the size of the angle between two lines reaching two points at the observation location. The smaller the angle, the closer the two celestial bodies are.

□ A solar eclipse is a phenomenon in which part or all of the sun is obscured by the moon and cannot be seen when the sun, moon, and earth are aligned. In 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse on April 9th and an annular solar eclipse on October 3rd. However, both of these eclipses cannot be seen in Korea. The total solar eclipse on April 8 can be observed in Mexico, the United States and Canada, while the annular solar eclipse on October 2 can be observed in Chile and Argentina.

□ The three major meteor showers, the Quadrantid meteor shower in January, the Perseid meteor shower in August, and the Geminid meteor shower in December, can also be seen as usual. The Quadrantid meteor shower, which will arrive first in the new year, is expected to be widely visible on the night of January 4, after midnight, and in the early morning hours of the 5th. The maximum time for the Perseid meteor shower is night of August 12 at 11.30pm and the moon sets at 11.06pm, so the observation conditions are very good. The peak time for the Geminid meteor shower is December 14 at 10 am. Since the peak time is noon and the moon is high all night, the environment is unfavorable for observation.

□ Meanwhile, the largest full moon (mang*) in 2024 is the moon rising on October 17, and the smallest full moon (mang) is the moon rising on February 24.
