There is much criticism of Chinese research in which a new corona mutation was tested on “humanized” mice. The genetically modified form of GX/2017, a cousin of Covid-19, caused the death of all mice tested within eight days.
Scientists had modified the mouse’s DNA so that the brain looked more like a human’s. The mammals were then administered the GX_P2V virus, which within a few days attacked the brain, lungs, bones, eyes and trachea. “This highlights the risk of GX_P2V spreading to humans and provides a unique perspective for understanding how Covid-related viruses attack cells,” the Chinese researchers said.
Genetic biologist Francois Balloux of University College London calls the Chinese experiment “totally useless” and “reckless.” “I don’t know what you can learn by deliberately infecting strange humanized mice with a random virus.”
The study does not describe the rigorous security measures required for this type of research. Balloux therefore fears the worst. He also indicates that there is a good chance that the Covid-19 virus was created precisely from this type of experiment.
Balloux is supported by Stanford professor Gennadi Glinsky. He writes on X: “This madness must end as soon as possible, before it is too late”.
