Ilham Aliyev made repeated statements of blackmail against the background of the ongoing Armenian-Azerbaijani foreign ministry talks in Almaty. He said that the demarcation and demarcation process is being carried out under the conditions dictated by them, that Azerbaijan is the leader of the region and should be taken into account. He also announced that they will not wait for the “revanchists” to raise their heads in Armenia and receive weapons from France, and let no one be offended by them. If Aliyev decides to make ambitious statements and blackmail against the background of the meeting in Almaty, it probably suggests that Azerbaijan does not feel very confident in Almaty, or that Armenia felt more confident than “usual”.
And the question arises whether what is unfolding today in Yerevan’s square and streets did not have its influence on this issue. I have referred to that circumstance and its beneficial effect many times. There is an impression that it got some “flesh and blood” in Almaty, and Aliyev decided to speak, on the one hand, perhaps trying to play on Armenia’s internal political strings, both in the direction of the government and the opposition, and on the other hand, perhaps external actors, which Azerbaijan at this stage seems to like. left alone.
On May 8, Pashinyan and Putin met in Moscow, and despite the expected complex and difficult picture, it seems that the meeting was not so much like that. As I noticed before the meeting, the parties in Moscow remained calm in the positions of tactical disagreements, instead they confirmed the preservation of strategic realities. In parallel, the US ambassador is meeting the representatives of the parliamentary opposition in Yerevan. The opposition, which is preparing to raise the question of no confidence in the Prime Minister at the urging of the movement of Saint Bagrat. And the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State has a conversation with the Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkey, during which the situation in the Caucasus was definitely discussed, where the United States does not need surprises at least until the presidential election.
A few days ago, the commander of the joint Turkish-Azerbaijani army stationed in Nakhichevan was invited to Tehran. Apparently, through him, Tehran sent certain signals about the importance of stability. Probably, it was those circumstances that sent Ilham Aliyev’s special representative to Israel to inform that Azerbaijan cannot help “friend Bibi” in any way from the point of view of playing with Iran’s nerves and attention in the Caucasus. Of course, Aliyev’s “loneliness” should not become a reason for Armenia’s archism, because events develop and change very quickly in the modern world, but it is perhaps an opportune opportunity for Armenia to carry out fundamental work in the direction of significant changes.
