Alfredo Cabrera, PRI candidate for mayor of Coyuca de Benítez, Guerrero, is murdered

The candidate of the PRI, PAN and PRD coalition for the municipal presidency of Coyuca de Benítez, Guerrero, Alfredo Cabrera Torres, was assassinated this Wednesday afternoon during his campaign closing rally.

In a video, the candidate is seen greeting his followers and a hand with a gun is seen pointing at his head and shooting him on several occasions.

The candidate of the Heart and Strength for Mexico alliance (PRI-PRD-PAN), for the mayor of Coyuca de Benítez, on the Costa Grande, José Alfredo Cabrera Barrientos, was shot dead when he was just about to go up to the stage to lead his Closing of the campaign in the Las Lomas neighborhood.

Around 5:40 in the afternoon, when Cabrera Barrientos was walking through the neighborhood’s basketball court, while greeting his supporter, a man shot him in the back with a short gun, according to a video that was spread on social networks.

At least 15 explosions are heard in the recording.

It is worth remembering that on May 17, the candidate for councilor of the PRI, PAN, PRD alliance, also by Coyuca de Benítez, Aníbal Zúñiga Cortés and his wife, Rubí Bravo Solís, were assassinated. Their bodies were found dismembered in a van in Acapulco.

In the electoral context, five candidates for mayor and one for a federal deputy have been murdered in Guerrero. In addition, he has suffered attacks from family members, bodyguards, and candidates’ collaborators.

There have also been armed attacks, such as the one suffered in February by the mayor of Taxco, Mario Figueroa Mundo, who is seeking re-election.

However, lethal violence has been present: on March 21, the candidate for Morena’s candidacy for mayor of Chilapa, Tomás Morales, was murdered.

On March 3, the PT candidate for mayor of Atoyac, on the Costa Grande, Alfredo González Díaz, was murdered.

On January 24, on the Chilapa-Tlapa federal highway, the former mayor of Atlixtac, PRD member Marcelino Ruíz Esteban and his wife, Guadalupe Guzmán Cano, were shot to death. Ruíz Esteban aspired to be the PRD candidate for mayor of Atlixtac. He was mayor from 2015 to 2021.

On December 21, 2023, the two-time PRI candidate for mayor of Acapulco, Ricardo Taja Ramírez, was shot to death.

Taja Ramírez resigned from the PRI and was a candidate for Morena’s candidacy for federal district 04.

In June 2023, the leader of the PVEM in the municipality of Copala, Jesús González Ríos, a candidate for mayor of Copala, was murdered.
