The World Health Organization has announced its intention to evacuate patients and its staff from Al-Shifa Hospital in the besieged Gaza Strip, which has become a target of Israeli bombing and has turned into a death zone.
The organization said in a statement carried by Agence France-Presse today: “It is working with its partners in the United Nations to develop urgent plans for the immediate evacuation of the remaining patients, staff and their families.”
Yesterday, the organization led a team of UN representatives on a mission to Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, which has become a target of Israeli airstrikes, declaring that the hospital has become a “death zone” and that plans must be made for the immediate evacuation of patients and staff.
The World Health Organization said in its statement that “the effects of the bombing and shooting were clear, as the UN team saw a mass grave at the entrance to the hospital and was told that more than 80 people were buried there,” noting that the shortage of clean water, fuel, medicines, food and other basic aid over a period of six weeks caused the largest and most advanced hospitals in Gaza to stop working.
The organization also indicated that 291 patients, including 32 children, are “in very critical condition” and 25 caregivers are still in the hospital, indicating that the hospital corridors and grounds are filled with medical and solid waste, which increases the risk of infection and the spread of epidemics.
The organization’s statement confirmed that a number of patients died during the past two or three days due to the lack of medical services.
In turn, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, confirmed via the X platform that the organization will continue to call on everyone to protect the health sector and civilians, expressing his regret for what is happening in Gaza because the current situation is “unbearable and unjustified,” calling for “an immediate ceasefire.”
