Al-Istiqlal fails to resolve controversial issues two weeks after the conference

The Executive Committee of the Istiqlal Party held a meeting on Saturday evening, which lasted for long hours, in which a number of outstanding issues and files were discussed before the national conference scheduled to be held at the end of this April. Some of them were agreed upon, while the discussion remained open regarding others to be resolved soon.

According to sources from within the Executive Committee of the Istiqlal Party, the meeting recommended Omar Ahjaira as acting head of the party’s team in the House of Representatives, indicating that the party has not completely turned the page on Nour El-Din Madian.

Data obtained by Hespress electronic newspaper indicated that the members of the Executive Committee refused Youssef Abtawi to attend the meeting, due to the great uproar that harmed the party and its image as a result of the slap he directed at his fellow parliamentarian, Moncef El Toub, during the election of the members of the conference’s preparatory committee.

The same sources also revealed that the meeting witnessed an agreement to cancel the demand to add the position of Deputy Secretary-General in the new structure of the party, which was called for by the Ould Rachid movement and was rejected by the Baraka movement.

Hespress sources indicated that a group of controversial points “are still outstanding and side discussions are taking place to resolve them,” considering that these disagreements remain normal in the country’s ancient Istiqlal Party.

In the meantime, the road appears clear for the current Secretary-General, Nizar Baraka, for a second term at the head of the party, after the Executive Committee meeting succeeded in achieving some kind of progress on a number of files that the leadership was unable to resolve at the meeting held last Monday.

It is noteworthy that the Istiqlal Party is experiencing major disagreements between its components due to mutual targeting among its members, which arose after the “slapping” incident that occurred during the elections of the Preparatory Committee for the Eighteenth National Congress, which was followed by the leaking of the audio recording of Madyan and his offensive talk about his colleague in the party, Rafia Al-Mansouri.
