Work is not just a means of earning income, it is also an essential factor in improving humanity’s mental health.
According to British psychiatrist Max Pemberton, many people fail to appreciate the importance and value of work, noting that jobs, in general, are important for our well-being and enhance our self-esteem and mental health.
He added, in an article published in the British newspaper “Daily Mail”: “We know that unemployment and depression are fundamentally linked. The unemployed are more likely to suffer from depression compared to those who are working.”
He highlighted that “there is good evidence that the best treatment for mild to moderate depression and anxiety is action.”
He continued: “I see many patients with mental health problems, and I feel hopeless because they have spent years – sometimes their entire lives – unemployed. For many of them, a job would be far more beneficial than any pill I could prescribe to them.”
Experts say that engaging in daily activities can play a major role in feeling satisfied and psychological comfort.
For his part, Mel Stride, Britain’s Minister of Work and Pensions, stressed last week that the British must return to what he called the “old belief”, which is that “work is good for us.”
At the time, Stride was talking about the large number of young people who were becoming unemployed due to mental health problems.
