In a breakthrough in technology, Japanese scientists have managed to make a robot smile “naturally” by using human cells.

Researchers from the University of Tokyo presented their findings in a study published in the journal Cell Reports Physical Science, and posted a video in which a group of robots appeared to display a natural and creepy smile at the same time.

Scientists have created a “natural smile” by injecting gelatin into human tissue, which they inserted into holes in the robot, a method inspired by actual ligaments in human skin.

The specialists hope that “this technology will provide a better understanding of the formation of wrinkles and the physiology of facial expressions, and that it will contribute to the development of materials for organ transplantation and cosmetic products.”

The ultimate goal of the team led by mechanical informatics professor Shuji Takeuchi is to provide robots with the “self-healing capabilities inherent” in human skin.

“The skin’s natural elasticity and strong adhesion means the skin can move with the robot’s mechanical components without tearing or peeling,” Takeuchi said.

In previous studies, scientists injected collagen into lab-grown skin with a wound, which was then glued to a robotic finger, with the goal of showing how the wound could heal.
