“No need to subscribe to Netflix… Live action movie in the center of Baghdad, a horror scene.” This is just the tip of the iceberg of comments that have spread among Iraqis in recent hours.
The reason is due to the outbreak of an armed confrontation in a popular area in the capital, which ended with the killing of a person in front of the eyes of the people of the area.
In front of the eyes of passers-by
A bystander apparently documented machine-gun fire between two groups of people, in the popular Maridi Market in Sadr City, east of Baghdad, in front of the eyes of the people at the site.
Meanwhile, a number of the shooters fled after stealing a civilian car, as appeared in the video clip that was widely circulated on social media.
While many Iraqis who posted the shocking video commented, lamenting the country’s conditions, criticizing the lack of weapons and the loss of security, as well as the absence of the relevant authorities.
This incident came just a day after an attack that also rocked the east of the Iraqi capital yesterday afternoon, Saturday, where unidentified gunmen opened fire on 3 people, killing 2 of them.
It also came after an assassination attempt a few days ago against the publisher of the well-known Al-Mada newspaper in the country, Fakhri Karim, after gunmen blocked his way and pelted his car with 11 bullets in central Baghdad.
It is noteworthy that over the past years, Iraq has witnessed many assassinations, attempted murders, kidnappings, and intimidation that targeted activists, thinkers, and media professionals opposed to some armed factions.
Investigations into these cases were often closed without accountability or finding the perpetrator.
