On Thursday, a court in Barcelona sentenced former Brazilian international star Dani Alves to 4 and a half years in prison, on charges of sexual assault.
The Catalan Supreme Court convicted Alves of sexually assaulting a woman in a nightclub in Barcelona in 2022, and ruled that he be imprisoned.
In addition, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain French player will be forced to compensate the victim by paying $163,000 (150,000 euros), and he was also sentenced to a restraining order for a period of 9 and a half years, according to Forbes.
After his release, Alves will have to complete 5 years of probation.
What happened?
- Alves was accused of raping a woman in the bathroom of the VIP section of Sutton nightclub in the early hours of December 31, 2022.
- He was arrested 3 weeks after the incident, and has been detained ever since on charges of “sexual assault.”
- Prosecutors demanded that Alves be imprisoned for 9 years, followed by 10 years of probation, and also demanded that he pay $163,000 (150,000 euros) in compensation to the victim, which the court ordered.
- The former Brazilian international, a three-time Champions League winner with Barcelona, initially denied knowing the victim in a television interview, but later admitted to having sex with her but claimed it was consensual.
- Alves told Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia that he originally lied because he was afraid his wife, Joana Sanz, would leave him.
- At the end of the 3-day trial that ended a week ago, Alves denied raping the young woman while standing in court.
- “If she wanted to leave, she could have left, she was not obligated to be there,” Alves told the court, adding that “at no time did the victim ask to leave.”
- Alves denied hitting the woman and also grabbing her hair, saying, “I’m not a violent man,” during his appearance on stage, which lasted about 20 minutes.
- When the trial began on Monday last week, the victim testified for more than an hour but did so behind a screen so she could not be identified.
