The Palestinian film Al-Lid, directed by Rami Younes and Sarah Emma Friedland, won its fifth award in its tour of international film festivals, as it won the Best Asian Film award at the Broummana Asian Film Festival in Italy, which concluded its activities on March 29.
The film is expected to begin its US tour with an opening screening scheduled at Harvard University on April 19.
Al-Lid is directed by Rami Younes and Sarah Emma Friedland and co-written by Iyas Salman. Roger Waters, a member of the famous Pink Floyd band, participates as an executive producer of the film, and Maysaa Abdel Hadi performs the voice of the city of Al-Lid. The film tells the story of the city of Lydda, which once represented a link between Palestine and the world. Her past, her present, and a hypothetical imagining of what her future might have been. MAD Solutions handles the global distribution of the film.
The film had its world premiere at the Amman International Film Festival in Jordan, where it competed in the Arab Feature Documentary Competition and won the Jury Prize for Best Documentary and the FIPRESI Award. He then toured several international festivals, the most recent of which was the Sgardi Altruf International Women’s Film Festival in Italy, where he received a special mention from the jury and a mention from the National Union of Film Critics.

Rami Younis is a Palestinian director, producer, writer, and journalist from Lydda. He was the founder and first presenter of a daily news program where he reveals the truth about fake news and information about Palestinian citizens. Ramey was a 2020 lecturer at Harvard Divinity School. He also worked as a parliamentary advisor and media spokesman for Palestinian Knesset Member Haneen Zoabi. He also participated in establishing and managing the first Palestinian music exhibition linking local music and the global music industry.
Sarah Emma Friedland is a director and producer based in New York. Her work has been shown in the United States and abroad and on PBS. Her work has been supported by grants and partnerships from the Jerome and Paul Newman Foundations, the Ford Foundations, NYSCA, the LABA House of Study, the Palestinian American Research Center, and the McDowell Colony. Friedland received the 2014 Paul Robison Award from the Newark Museum and was nominated for a New York Emmy. She is also the Director of the MDOCS Institute for Narratives and Storytelling at Skidmore University and an active member of the Meerkat Media Collective.
Executive Producer Roger Waters is a British artist and co-founder of the international rock band Pink Floyd, and is considered the most important member of the band as he plays many vital roles such as writing and composing songs. Roger was famous for his hostility to the Israeli occupation of Palestine, and raised the Palestinian flag in many concerts, in addition to his categorical refusal to hold any concerts in Israel. Roger participates in the production of the film “Al-Leed” to confirm his position in support of the Palestinian cause.
