Polygon, as usual, presented a list of the best films of the year, and it came early this year, but we have already seen a variety of 2024 films that are highly recommended for viewing on big screens or platforms, and these are the most important of them:
THE PROMISED LAND
“The Promised Land” or more appropriately translated “The Bastard” is a powerful historical drama anchored by a strong performance by star Mad Mikkelsen, who plays Ludvig Kahlen, a retired German army officer who takes his pension to try to establish a home on a barren swamp, and embarks on a crazy project to fertilize and farm… These lands are in the Jutland region.
This area, which can be described as “forbidden”, happens to be under the rule of Friedrich de Schinkel, a young feudal lord, slave owner and ruthless tyrant, who sets out to destroy his efforts at any cost.
ORION AND THE DARK
Orion and the Darkness sounds like a fantasy-like children’s story about a frightened boy who meets a demon, who helps him overcome his fears, but it takes a twisty turn when it’s revealed that this story is being told by a grown-up version of this young boy to his daughter.
The film is currently available on Netflix for family home viewing.
The Holdovers
Alexander Payne brings audiences to a New England boarding school in 1970 in “The Holdovers,” a funny story about three lonely, mismatched souls brought together during vacation.
Paul Giamatti plays Paul Hunham, an ancient history teacher whose only happiness seems to derive from holding his privileged students to task and failing them without regard to political considerations. He is the kind of man who looks at a student and wants to start a new lesson with him in the last hours before break.
Holdovers is a film about struggling with the past to better understand the present, and many of the best scenes in the film are those that clearly tie this in. Conversations resulting from a provocative work of ancient art, an interaction in a bookstore, and a run with an old friend, scenes that paint a picture of past life through the film’s star, Paul Giamatti, that contextualizes his decisions in the present.
