The technical expert in the Referees Committee of the Bahrain Football Association, Nawaf Shukrallah, confirmed that work is continuing towards implementing the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in our Bahraini stadiums, in implementation of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, President of the General Sports Authority, Chairman of the Committee. He said that the Referees Committee, under the guidance of the Board of Directors of the Bahrain Football Association, headed by the Federation’s President Sheikh Ali bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, continues its work towards applying the technology in stadiums, as it has begun, through the electronic system, theoretical courses to introduce the protocol for applying the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.

He pointed out that the selection of referees who will undergo VAR training sessions was made through a specific strategy, developed in consultation with members of the Referees Committee headed by Ali Al-Samahiji and the Acting Head of the Referees Department, Khaled Al-Allan, indicating that the selection was based on a homogeneous mix of experienced referees and promising junior referees. The expected age for them to have a prominent future in the arbitration profession; This ensures the continuation of the gains achieved by the Bahraini Whistle through its participation and management of various benefits.

He pointed out that the work is a continuation of the work of previous committees. To achieve the desired goals, by flying the flag of the Kingdom at various levels, stressing that every effort will be made to continue the excellence of Bahraini governance, and to keep pace with continental and international developments in the arbitration corps, by relying on a promising generation with a bright future.

He explained that the referees who will obtain the VAR license will be selected after a comprehensive audit and follow-up process, pointing out that relying on promising players comes in order to give them more experience, as the list included international referees, first- and second-class referees, and some third-class referees.

Shukrallah stressed that not selecting most of the first-class assistant referees comes in line with international standards in which the assistant referee does not need a VAR licence, as the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) grants the license to arena referees only, as the assistant referee can participate in managing any match. With an arena referee holding a VAR licence, whether domestic or international.

He revealed the inclusion of Bahraini referees participating in the Asian Football Confederation’s Referees Academy program in VAR courses. This is in order for them to receive priority and preference in the selections of the Asian elite referees after they graduate from the academy.

He stated that the hard work and continuous effort by everyone is all in the interest of the arbitration system in the Kingdom of Bahrain, praising in this context the support and backing of the Board of Directors of the Bahraini Federation, headed by Sheikh Ali bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa and his deputy, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali bin Isa Al Khalifa, and the members of the Council.
