The Cannes International Film Festival revealed the list of films participating in its 77th session, during a press conference on Thursday, in the presence of Director General Thierry Frémaux and Festival President Iris Knobloch.
The selected films will compete from May 14 to 25 in the festival’s various sections, namely Official Competition, Un Certain Regard, Out of Competition, Midnight Screenings, Premiere, and Special Screenings.
19 films are participating in the official competition, whose jury is headed by director Greta Gerwig. They are The Apprentice by Iranian director Ali Al-Abbasi, Motel Destino by Karim Ainouz, Bird by Andrea Arnold, Emilia Perez by Frenchman Jacques Audiard, Anora by Sean Baker, and Megalopolis by American director Francis Ford Coppola. , The Shrouds by David Cronenberg, The Substance by French director Coralie Farquet, Grand Tour by Portuguese director Miguel Gomez, and Marcello Mio by Christophe Honoré.
Films competing for the Palme d’Or also include the Chinese film Liu Yi Dai gglov, directed by Jia Zhangke, All We Imagine as Light by Payal Kapadia, Kinds of Kindness by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, Beating Hearts by Gilles Lellouche, Diamant Brut by Agathe Redinger, and Oh Canada by Paul Schrader. And Limonov: The Ballad of Eddie by Kirill Serebrennikov, Parthenope by Paolo Sorrentino, and The Girl with the Needle by Swedish director Magnus von Horn.
For the first time, Saudi cinema participates with a feature film in one of the competitions of the Cannes Film Festival, which is the film “Noura” by director Tawfiq Al-Zaidi, which competes with 14 films in the “Un Certain Regard” section, after the film was shown for the first time during the activities of the third session of the Red Sea Film Festival in December. Last, it won the Best Saudi Film Award.

The festival will screen 4 films out of competition, including the first international screenings of the first part of the Horizon, An American Saga series about the conquest of the American West starring and directed by Kevin Costner, She’s Got No Name by Chan Peter Ho-sun, and the film Rumors starring Cate Blanchett and directed by Evan Johnson and Galen. Johnson and Jay Madden, along with George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
In the “Midnight Screenings” section, the festival will display 4 films: Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In directed by Sui Chiang, The Surfer starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Lorcan Finnegan, The Balconettes by Noémie Merlant, and I Am the Executioner directed by Ryu Seung Wan.
In the Cannes Premiere section, or the premiere in Cannes, the Moroccan-French director Nabil Ayouch is showing his new film “Everybody Loves Toda”, alongside director Leo Carax’s film C’est pas moi, The Matching Bang by Emmanuel Corcoul, Miséricorde by director Alain Guiraudy, and Le roman de Jim directed by Arnaud Lario and Jean-Marie Lario, and Rendez-vous avec Pol Pot directed by Rithy Panh.
