Israeli media revealed that Israeli War Council Minister Benny Gantz expressed his anger at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a cabinet meeting last Thursday.
Benny Gantz said during the meeting: “It seems that the prime minister is doing everything in his power to make decisions alone and not jointly,” according to Israeli Channel 13.
Gantz made these statements amid complaints that Netanyahu is making decisions related to efforts to reach a ceasefire and prisoner release agreement with Hamas on his own without consulting the military cabinet or the security cabinet.
Defense Minister Yoav Galant complained that Netanyahu had bypassed the defense establishment, which led to mistakes being made during the meeting, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Gallant rejected the ceasefire agreement that was proposed in the negotiations with Hamas as well, and told Shin Bet head Ronen Bar and Mossad head David Barnea: “This is 10 times what we presented in the previous agreement. You were sent by the Israeli political and security cabinet and must “You must submit your report unless the Prime Minister prevents you.”
Netanyahu insisted that he did not prevent Bar and Barnea from submitting reports to the Cabinet, saying that the matter was before the Security Council.
For their part, Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs and National Security Council Chairman Tzachi Hanegbi said that the content of the negotiations was not presented to the cabinet, according to Channel 13.
In this context, Gantz commented on the Israeli Prime Minister’s behavior regarding “making decisions himself,” saying: “This is neither a unity government nor a war government. This is not the way things work.”
Tensions between Netanyahu and Gantz were already high, and this disagreement in the security cabinet comes amid escalating tensions between Netanyahu and Gantz in the wake of reports that Egyptian mediators contacted Gantz directly to advance hostage deal talks.
According to reports cited by officials in Cairo, the talks held by the Egyptians with Gantz angered the prime minister, who felt that it was “an attempt to push Gantz to the front of the stage,” amid Netanyahu’s refusal to push the settlement process forward, as long as Hamas adheres to its demands.
