A Lebanese security official revealed new details regarding the attack that occurred Wednesday on the American embassy in Beirut.
The official told the Associated Press that the attack was launched by 4 people, 3 armed men and a fourth who carried him away in his car.
He added that one of the attackers was killed, another fled, while the third was injured and arrested by the army.
The US embassy in Beirut came under fire from three gunmen on Wednesday, before embassy security and the Lebanese army intervened and opened fire on the attackers.
Immediately following the incident, a statement was issued by the Lebanese army stating that the embassy in the Awkar area had come under fire from a person of Syrian nationality.
The army added that it responded to the sources of fire, wounding the shooter and transporting him to the hospital.
In an additional statement, the army said: “Army units deployed in the vicinity of the US embassy in Awkar are conducting an inspection of the surrounding area, and are working to implement the necessary security measures to maintain the security of the area.”
The US Embassy in Lebanon confirmed a shooting incident near its entrance.
She added that her diplomatic team and facilities are safe, continuing: “Investigations are ongoing and we are in close contact with law enforcement authorities in Lebanon.”
