Lieutenant General His Excellency Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of the Interior, confirmed that the royal directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the great king of the country, may God protect and preserve him, are to protect fish wealth and establish procedures and controls that will preserve them as a resource. Authentic and important to the Bahraini citizen, it constitutes a road map for preserving natural resources, enhancing marine stocks, and organizing the fishing profession to be profitable and beneficial for the people of Bahrain, which is a traditional profession that has been passed down over generations.

His Excellency the Minister praised the support and follow-up of the esteemed government headed by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, may God protect him, in order to enhance performance in all areas of national action and promote sustainable development, noting that the Ministry of Interior, based on its role in promoting… Maritime Security and Marine Wealth Protection, in cooperation with the Supreme Council for the Environment, is working to establish a specialized department in the Coast Guard to manage maritime oversight and protect marine fishing.

He explained that among the tasks of this administration are confronting illegal fishing activities, controlling cases of exploitation of the marine environment, and coordinating with the relevant authorities in enforcing relevant laws and decisions, in a way that ensures the development, growth and preservation of fish and marine wealth for current and future generations.

He added that during the year 2023, Coast Guard patrols were able to deal with 2,365 maritime violations, including those related to fishing outside the permitted periods and violating the requirements of small vessels. The violators were referred to the Public Prosecution, the violating fishing nets were confiscated, and all prescribed legal measures were taken in this regard, stressing the continuation of controlling any violations or transgressions affecting marine stocks and implementing the established controls.

His Excellency the Minister said, “The sea is an essential resource and an integral part of the life of the Bahraini individual. Pearl fishing and fishing are among the inherited professions in Bahraini society, and it is a respected Bahraini profession, since the era of the great founder, the late Sheikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, God willing.” Noting that the regulation process takes place in cooperation and coordination between the relevant government agencies within the framework of working as a single team and in strengthening national responsibility, and includes the implementation of all procedures related to determining the areas in which fishing is permitted and their seasons.

At the conclusion of his statement, His Excellency indicated that the Coast Guard is moving forward in performing its role and tasks in order to enhance maritime safety and work to provide services to seafarers with the highest levels of efficiency, speed and achievement.
