Fenway Sports Group, which owns Liverpool FC, the competitor for the English Premier League title, announced on Tuesday the appointment of Michael Edwards, the club’s former sporting director, as director of football operations.
The group said in a statement that Edwards (44 years old) will assume several responsibilities, “including unifying efforts to select new leadership” for Liverpool’s football sector.
Edwards arrived at Anfield in 2011, and oversaw Liverpool’s performance analysis department before eventually assuming the position of sporting director in 2016. He left after his contract expired in 2022.
The club is currently selecting a successor to coach Jurgen Klopp, who announced last January that he would leave his position at the end of the current season, and is currently without a sporting director.
Liverpool is equal on 64 points with Arsenal, the league leaders, but trails on goal difference and is one point ahead of defending champion Manchester City.
“He will return to us in a larger role than he had previously and with broader powers,” Fenway Sports Group President Mike Gordon said in a statement.
He added: “He will take over the responsibilities I previously had regarding the supervision and management of Liverpool’s football operations.
He explained: “Fulfilling this role has been one of the greatest privileges of my life and handing it over and returning to a more traditional role in the ownership structure is something I have been hoping to do for some time, but only if we are successful in finding the right individual or structure.”
Edwards, who helped Liverpool return to their golden era, is looking forward to new challenges and opportunities, including Fenway Sports Group acquiring a second club.
“One of the biggest factors in my decision was the group’s commitment to acquiring and overseeing an additional club, and growing this area of its organizational structure,” Edwards said.
He added: “I believe it is necessary to remain competitive, investing and expanding our existing football portfolio.”
