Bahraini engineer Jassim Al Shirawi has extensive experience in the field of oil, gas and energy in general, which helped him be elected as Secretary General of the International Energy Forum (IEF).
Al-Shirawi was elected by the Executive Council of the International Energy Forum, headed by the representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Kurdi, at a meeting held on Monday, June 24, in Rome, to become the sixth Secretary-General of the Forum.
The new Secretary-General’s term is scheduled to begin at the beginning of next year (2025), after the end of the term of the current Secretary-General, Joseph McMonigle (from the United States).

Who is Jassim Al Shirawi?
Jassim Al Shirawi has over 40 years of experience in the oil, gas and energy sectors, including oil and gas exploration and production, petroleum derivatives trading, pricing and related policies, as well as natural gas and renewable energy.
Al Shirawi obtained a Master of Science degree with distinction in Engineering Project Management from the University of Glamorgan in Wales, United Kingdom, in 1999, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from California State University – Long Beach in 1981.
Since 1981, Engineer Jassim has held several positions at Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), including the position of Director of Planning and Development.
During the period (2007-2021), he held the position of Director General of Oil and Gas Affairs at the Bahrain National Oil and Gas Authority and the Ministry of Oil.
His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the country, awarded the “National Action Medal” to Al Shirawi in December 2019, in appreciation of his effective contribution and years of giving to the Kingdom of Bahrain.
In July 2023, Jassim Al Shirawi established a specialized energy consultancy firm, JAIS ENERGY SERVICES.
Engineer Jassim participated in many company boards of directors, as he assumed the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bapco Retail Company (Bapco Supply) from November 2019 until the same month in 2022.
Jassim Al Shirawi also served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bahrain National Gas Expansion Company (Tawassah) during the period from February 2016 to March 2022, and was appointed a member of the Board of Directors of the Bahrain Aviation Fueling Company (BAFCO) in (2007-2015).

Jassim Al Shirawi chaired the Energy Conservation Committee, contributed to laying the foundations for the establishment of the Sustainable Energy Center, and became a member of the Implementation and Follow-up Committee headed by the Minister of Electricity and Water in Bahrain, which is the ministry responsible for coordinating the implementation of the action plan for the National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Plan. He also chaired the sub-committee for the National Energy Efficiency Plan in the Oil, Gas and Petrochemicals Industry in Bahrain (2017-2019).
Engineer Jassim has social activities in various fields, including those related to engineering and education. He is a member of the Bahrain Society of Engineers, a former member of its Board of Directors, and a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Bahrain Society for Strategic Planning during the period from 2004 until March 2012.
Since January 2012, he has been a member of the Advisory Committee for Mechatronics Engineering Programs at Bahrain University of Technology. He has also been a member since 2014 of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors of Bayan Al-Bahrain School. Recently, he became Chairman of the Advisory Council, and contributed to supporting educational activities and supporting development projects and programs. for school.
He also led the school to participate in and win the Zayed Future Energy Prize in January 2018, by developing the school’s “cafeteria” as an educational platform that uses a number of sustainable technologies such as solar energy, wind energy, and recycling water and food waste.
In addition, Al Shirawi has been appointed as an advisor to the Industry and Energy Committee of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry since December of last year.
It is worth noting that Engineer Jassim was a member of the Executive Council of the International Energy Forum (IEF) during the period from 2014 to 2021, a member of the International Support Group of the Forum, and a representative of the Bahrain National Oil and Gas Authority since 2008.
